Drawing the Curtin on a glittering career

The 55 times capped Irish international has announced her retirement from the game after a lengthy career which saw her play semi professionally in the US, Norway and for a number of WNL sides.

The defender spent last season with Treaty United after the withdrawal of her previous side Limerick FC from the Women’s National League but had previously featured for Cork Women’s and Galway WFC in the competition.

The Limerick native had been a promising underage player in the colours of Clare side, Lifford Ladies reaching the 2003 FAI Women’s Cup final and featuring in Irish squads at U16, U17 & U19 level prior to her senior international debut at the age of 16.

Marie went on to feature for the Republic of Ireland in the qualifying campaigns for the 2005, 2009 & 2013 UEFA Euros and the 2007 & 2011 FIFA World Cups.

She was one of a number of Irish players on full scholarships at Hofstra University in the mid 00’s while playing her club football with Long Island Fury, scoring the first three goals in their Women’s Premier Soccer League debut in 2006. The New York based side went on to secure the WPSL title that season with Curtin playing a starring role.

Curtin also had a spell in Norway for the 2012 season where she featured for Fortuna Alesund prior to returning to Cork Women’s for the inaugural WNL season.
