Longford impress to make Cup advance
There was no giant killing at Bishopsgate this evening, as Longford Town cruised past Bangor GG 4-0 in the FAI Cup. The visitors had plenty of energy, but the difference in quality showed, as the hosts fired four second half goals.
Dean Williams opened the scoring with a flicked finish, after connecting with a superb pass over the top of the defence from Karl Chambers; ensuring a 1-0 interval lead.
On the restart, Longford kept motoring, with Dylan Grimes making it two from the spot, after Rob Manley was tripped in the box.
A third was added when a wonder strike from the outside of the right boot of Darragh Nugent found the top corner.
Substitute Callum Warfield and Aaron O’Driscoll rounded off the rout with two late headers.
Bangor GG started with lots of energy, but even in the opening stages, Longford’s quality was at times overwhelming. Chambers showed this quality with a dinked pass into the path of Williams, who left Tom Murphy helpless in the Bangor net with a flick into the net.
GG’s David O’Sullivan reminded his former club why he is their record scorer with a shot just over the bar, but the visitors would have to be content with a goal deficit at the break.
Their hopes of a revival were shot down as Manley was brought down by Captain Cian Fadden in the box. Grimes made no mistake sending the ‘keeper the other way from 12 yards.
To rub salt into the wound, Longford would add three more goals before time was up, and the visitor’s heads dropped. The pick of the goals was a pinpoint 25-yard screamer from Nugent. The outside of the foot shot is one of the best goals you will see in quite some time, as he blasted the ball in off the bar.
Longford got their expected win, but it’s an important win nonetheless for Daire Doyle. De Town’s first win since March is exactly what was needed, if they still have hopes of surviving relegation this term.
For Bangor GG, it is disheartening to lose by such a margin. However, for 60 minutes, a Premier Division side were struggling to break them down, and there were even a few chances for an equaliser. A spirited performance, even if the result says otherwise.

4-0 Longford! Warfield meets an Elworthy cross while unmarked, he guided the ball nicely past the GG 'keeper.
McGuirk showed good pace to escape the attention of Elworthy, then drive on goal. He took a shot, but it wasn't powerful enough, and rolled into the arms of Steacy.
It's clear both managers are giving their back up players a few minutes, seeing as the game is now over as a contest.
Mullins is on for Bangor
Fadden is off for Bangor.
It's well and truly game over now, Bangor's heads have gone, and there's chance after chance coming for de Town.
Nugent got in, and played the ball just across the face of goal, but no one could meet it. So close.
Dobbs, O\'Brien and Warfield are on for Town.
Manley, Grimes and Williams are off for Longford.
What a goal from Darragh Nugent!!!! 25 yards out Nugent strikes it with the outside of his right foot. It finds the top corner and drops in off the crossbar. Incredible stuff!
Robinson is on for Town.
Aodh Dervin is off for Town.
Meagher picks up a yellow card.
Goal! Dylan Grimes slots the penalty away into the left side of the net.
Penalty Longford! Manley skipped past two defenders before being brought down in the box.
O'Driscoll makes a key defensive header. Andre was ready to head home a cross, but the centre-half got ahead of Andre to clear.
Shane Elworthy should do better after getting in behind and avoiding the offside flag. He had time to pick out a team mate, but his delivery is poor and avoids everyone in a yellow shirt.
Aodh Dervin should score! The midfielder was free at the back post after Elworthy fired a cross across goal. Dervin lashed at the ball and somehow didn't hit the target.
Aaron McNally is on for Town.
Davis is off for de Town.
There's been a lot of exchanging of possession, but not a lot of chances. The bobbly, sun-baked pitch is making controlling the ball, and therefore the game, difficult.
The first five minutes of the half have been relatively even, and the visitors have probably just edged it. A promising start for Bangor.
Bangor love a long throw, and in fairness, they're causing some problems for de Town. Derek Prendergast just had GG's first shot on target, a soft header straight into the arms of Steacy.
And we're back underway. Longford kick off.
Bangor have looked pretty good, despite the leagues difference between the two sides. In spite of this, Longford have had the majority of the good chances, and look likely to add to their lead.

David O'Sullivan shoots after the ball bounces in the box from a long throw. His finish is just over the top. Great chance for the away side.
Normal service has resumed, and Longford are back on the front foot. The Bangor defence is just holding out though, Prendergast is proving invaluable.
There's been a stark change from Bangor, they've had a few minutes of pressure on the Town goal. The pressing and energy of Andre and O'Callaghan are proving to be dangerous.
David O'Sullivan sees his shot on goal blocked in close. O'Callaghan was tenacious with the ball at his feet, kept driving forwards and played a low ball to O'Sullivan at the near post.
It's backs against the wall for Bangor GG. Rob Manley is causing a lot of problems for the visitors, his quick feet and clever passing are creating plenty of chances.
Dylan Grimes hits the bar from a free-kick. There was plenty of curl and power on the strike, but it didn't quite dip low enough.
Aaron McGuirk is on for Bangor.

Rob Manley has a great chance to make it two! He shifts the ball past the defender, and slides the ball just past the post.
Water break for both sides.
Bangor GG have started to show some teeth, putting plenty of pressure on the hosts. If anyone is going to open up the Longford defence, it looks like it could be the pacy Andre.
Evan Farrell importantly cuts out a well weighted pass in behind from Chambers, Williams would have been in to score again if he hadn't.
Goal Longford! It's Dean Williams, the forward latches onto a fantastic ball in behind from Chambers, and flicks it past the 'keeper.
Conor Davis should score! He meets a low cross from yards out, but Murphy makes himself big to make an impressive save.
De Town have another chance from another short corner. Nugent goes down on the edge of the box, and Aodh Dervin drilled a shot towards goal, unfortunately for him it was inaccurate.
First attempt from either team comes, as Nugent flicks up a pass from a short corner. His volley goes well over the bar.
Longford have predictably had quite a lot of the ball early on. However, Bangor are pressing, and Andre showed his pace to put the defence under pressure.
And we're off, Bangor GG get the game started.
Though a home win seems likely, these kind of ties can turn out to be shocks. At the very least, it should be an entertaining watch.
Bangor GG team news: The side is unchanged from their league opener. Derek Prendergast starts in defensive midfield, looking to bring some solidity up against a high class opponent.
Longford team news: Daire Doyle makes a trio of changes to the side that drew against Bohs last time out. McDonnell, Davis and Chambers are in, Kirk, McNally and Joe Manley are out.
