Match Preview: Cork City v Athlone Town

Athlone Town make the long journey South this Friday night, to take on Cork City at Turner’s Cross buoyed on by a 3-1 win over Galway United last weekend.

The visitors hope winger, Adam Wixted will be able to continue his impressive form and that current top scorer, Stephen Meaney, will get himself on the scoresheet again.

Cork will be disappointed with their 1-0 defeat to Cabinteely last week due to a deflected cross and will be looking to bounce back with a win.

Dylan McGlade and Cian Bargary will be vital for The Rebels, along with the likes of Gearoid Morrissey and Mark McNulty, who will need to show their experience to get a result against a young and talented Athlone Town.

The last three meetings between the sides resulted in two wins for Cork and a draw, so if history is anything to go by then City will be seen as favourites. Although, it must be considered that these matches were played in 2014.

Speaking to Rebel Army TV ahead of the game, Dylan McGlade spoke of the belief he has in his teammates and how they need to ensure their performances are of the highest quality.

“I have full confidence in this squad. There is a lot of quality in the team, even in the younger lads who don’t have a lot of experience”.

“I fully believe that as long as we are doing what we need to be doing, we will let other teams worry about us. We need to make sure that we are performing to the levels that this team can and impose our style of play on the game”.

McGlade also discussed the Athlone side and the talent that they possess.

“Looking at their squad, you have to respect the players that they have brought in. They have put together a good side and they will be very dangerous going forward”.

Both sides will fancy themselves coming into this one and it should be a very entertaining game with the attacking talent that will be on show.
