Match Report
Jamaica hold strong against constant Brazilian pressure to qualify for the round of sixteen in second place of Group F thanks to a scoreless draw in Melbourne. The draw eliminates Brazil from the Women’s World Cup as Jamaica qualify for the knockout stages for the first time in the team’s history. Brazil dominated the first half of the game in both possession and chances created but were unable to trouble Rebecca Spencer in between the Jamaican sticks. Tamires was looking here typically dangerous down the left flank and created two good chances for herself in the opening forty-five minutes. The experienced full-back also created a great chance for Ary Borges when her ball was met by the head of the player that scored a hat-trick in the opening game of the group, but Borges rose up too early and headed over the bar. Marta was looking sharp on her first start of the tournament and was responsible a lot of Brazil’s best football, playing intelligent reverse passes and moving the ball around the pitch with pace and intent. Chantelle and Allyson Swaby were their commanding selves yet again as the centre-back pairing for The Reggae Girlz and were keeping Brazil at arm’s length for the majority of the game. The second half was more of the same for Brazil, pressurising the Jamaican side for large portions of the game without creating a real chance of note, mainly due to Allyson Swaby’s brilliant reading of the game. Bunny Shaw had the thankless task of playing the game as the lone striker for a team that was with very little possession in the opposition half and even when she created chances through her hard running of the channels, she found herself completely isolated in the Brazil half. A late corner kick caused carnage in the box when Beatriz scooped a shot up into the air before Debinha’s header was saved by Spencer, ending Brazil’s hopes of making a run in this year's competition. Jamaica haven’t conceded a goal in the World Cup and will be a tough opponent for whoever they face as winners of group H.Historic Draw For Jamaica Ends Brazilian World Cup Dream
