Borges Dream Debut Inspires Brazil To Opening Win
Ary Borges scored a hat-trick on her World Cup debut as Brazil cruised past World Cup debutants Panama 4-0 at the Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide to take control of Group F of the Women’s World Cup.
Brazil sit at the top of Group F with three points while Jamaica and France behind them on one point each.
The early stages were littered with incomplete yet impressive Brazilian attacks, with their final pass or shot inches away from their intended target.
Brazil did take the lead in the nineteenth minute through Ary Borges, who headed into the ground from a pinpoint cross from Debinha to score on her World Cup debut.
Borges grabbed a second twenty minutes later in a similar fashion. This time Tamires made a clever overlapping run and crosses to find Borges, and although Yenith Bailey saved from her initial header, Borges made no mistake with her follow-up effort.
Bailey was keeping Panama in the game with saves from Beatriz Zaneratto and Luana, with Panama finding it incredibly difficult to sustain any meaningful spells of possession.
Early in the second half, Brazil scored potentially the goal of the tournament through Beatriz Zaneratto.
Debinha and Adriana linked up nicely on the left wing before Debinha crossed for Ary Borges. Instead of going for her hat-trick, Borges backheeled the ball to Beatriz and the Brazilian attacker finished calmly to make it 3-0. A beautiful team goal from Pia Sundhage’s side.
The good karma from passing the ball while on a hat-trick was rewarded in the seventieth minute for Ary Borges, when substitute Geyse whipped a ball in from the left and Borges, yet again, found space in the box to head home.
Marta came off the bench and had the chance to score in her sixth World Cup tournament, but her tame effort from a close-range free-kick was saved easily by Bailey.
Panama threatened late in the game to improve the scoreline from their perspective but Riley Tanner’s deflected shot was saved well by Leticia in the Brazil goal. A statement of intent from Brazil in their opening game with the women in yellow and blue as they looked dangerous from start to finish.

The second-half starts with Panama all to do.
HALF-TIME: Brazil takes a two-goal lead into the half-time break thanks to a brace from Ary Borges. Brazil have dominated this game so far and may even feel they should be further ahead. Beatriz and Debinha have starred in their first game at this World Cup, as has Panama keeper Yenith Bailey who could do very little about the two goals she conceded. Second-half action to come.
Tamires right-footed cross manages to find Beatriz in the box but her touch is just too far in front of her and Bailey claims the loose ball. Two minutes added at the end of the first half.
2-0 TO BRAZIL! Tamiers makes a brilliant overlapping run and crosses to find Ary Borges. Her header is saved by Bailey but the keeper cannot do anything with the follow-up shot by Borges who grabs her second of the game. Brazil are full value for their two-goal lead.
Luana waits on the edge of the box from the free kick and when the ball finds her after an acrobatic effort by Debinha is skewed away from goal her long-range effort is brilliantly saved by Bailey.
Beatriz collects possession in midfield and is fouled on the turn. A decent position for a delivery.
A break for Brazil after some possession for Panama ends with Beatriz, but her touch in the box is heavy and the chance is lost.
Bailey is very casual on the ball before clearing the ball to her right, giving a corner kick away. Nothing comes of this but that sums up the issues for Panama on the ball.
1-0 TO BRAZIL! Debinha gets down the left and cuts back on her right foot to cross for Borges who finds space in the six-yard box to head into the ground past Bailey. Well deserved lead for Brazil!
Debinha takes the free kick and although the height is perfect the curve sends the ball just wide of the left-hand post
Beatriz with quick feet on the edge of the box and is brought down for a Brazil free kick in a dangerous position outside the box.
Although Brazil are dominating the game with their swift attacks Panama are energetic and scrappy when the ball is in contention. Getting meaningful possession in the Brazil half will be their biggest challenge in this game.
Debinha drives forward into the Panama box but here final touch is too heavy and loses possession.
Beatriz shoots from range but her sighter curls over the bar.
Tamires makes a clever forward run and her cross finds the other Brazil full-back in the box, but Antonia can only blaze her shot well over.
Antonia whips a ball in for Debinha but she gets under it too much and her header flies over. Brazil look dangerous early here.
Early chance for Brazil as Beatriz plays Adrianna through but her shot is saved by Bailey.
And after very passionate renditions of the national anthems from both the Brazil and Panama players, we're underway at the Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide. Brazil in their famous yellow and blue kits, Panama tips off wearing all red.
