Live Women’s Nations League: Albania v Republic of Ireland

Denise O'Sullivan's late goal may have secured top spot for Ireland after torrential rain threatened to ruin their Albanian odyssey in the UEFA Women's Nations League as the match officials were forced to suspend the game at the interval for over an hour to clear the surface water off the field of play.

Coming off the back of facing the same opposition on Friday night in Tallaght, the Girls In Green started on the front foot controlling possession but chances were limited. Katie McCabe floated a cross that eventually found Kyra Carusa, the forward just unable to get the ball controlled to strike at goal.

For the opening quarter of an hour Ireland dominated possession but could not show the same goal scoring exploits like we had seen in Tallaght. Denise O’Sullivan came close in one of a host of half chances where either a pass was not correctly played or just not enough power on the effort toward goal.

The best of the early chances came the way of the visitors after 17 minutes, Katie McCabe’s inswinging corner from the right channel caused chaos in the Albania Box, Caitlin Hayes headed the corner into the path of O’Sullivan, whose effort was saved. In the aftermath it was an absolute scramble with Albania doing enough to clear, the danger remained as Louise Quinn took possession on the edge of the box, her effort just going wide of the far post.

With 20 minutes gone in Shkoder the weather turned nasty and the game as a contest was becoming difficult. Thunderstorm activity in the area caused tornetrial rain to fall on the surface at the Loro Boriçi Stadium, making chances few and far between. By the half hour mark the water began to lodge on the field and the question of whether this game would be called off was starting to appear.

Amidst all the rainfall, Albania almost struck the opener 36 minutes in, a completely unmarked Mimoza Hamidi ghosted in behind the Irish defence and the ball held up on the wet surface enough for Diane Caldwell and Hayes to come across and clear the danger.

Conditions looked to have subsided briefly toward the end of the half but again the heavy rain continued to fall. At half time the decision was made to suspend the contest for one hour to allow the elements to change.

After a lengthy hiatus it was more of the same through the second half when it eventually arrived. Ireland continued to dominate the encounter but just couldn't find a breakthrough in the opening exchanges of the second period. Ireland threatened through changes for Carusa, Quinn, McCabe and Hayes but they couldn't find a way past another inspired performance from Rexhepi and a large slice of good fortune for the defenders just ahead of her.

It would be O'Sullivan who would find the key to unlocking the blanket defence. Her initial touch from Atkinson's centre put Carusa through and her cutback arrived back at the feet of the Cork woman who buried it from close range to send the travelling fans wild.

Katie McCabe would try her luck from distance in the early minutes of added time but Rexhepi was well placed to tip it over the top of the cross bar as Ireland controlled the closing stages of the game.

In terms of group progression, as it stands with Northern Ireland and Hungary level in their encounter with half an hour to play, Ireland will have secured top spot in the group provided there isn't a winner in that clash in Belfast.
