Match Report

Girls In Green Successful In Historic Aviva Debut

Three goals from Lucy Quinn, Kyra Carusa & Lily Agg were enough for the Republic of Ireland to finally emerge from their recent controversy and let the football do the talking as they defeated Northern Ireland in a historic first appearance at the Aviva Stadium this afternoon.

With the departure of head coach Vera Pauw the pressure on the Irish side was compounded with the comments from Diane Caldwell earlier this week but the girls in green rose to the standard they promised as they never looked like losing this game, dominating possession, territory and chances from very early on.

In front of a record attendance of 35,944 the Republic of Ireland started very brightly as they probed and prodded at the visitor’s defence in the early exchanges.

Debutant Caitlin Hayes and exile Tyler Toland both started for Ireland as interim head coach Eileen Gleeson made just four changes from the starting team against Nigeria in the World Cup. Diane Caldwell and Lucy Quinn also were in from the start.

With a dozen minutes on the clock San Diego Wave forward Kyra Carusa looked to have gotten on the end of a through ball but she was called back for offside. Herself and O’Sullivan continued to press at the visitor’s defence but were unable to find a breakthrough.

The pattern of the game continued as the home side kept the lion’s share of possession and opportunities but a resolute defence from the Northern Irish side kept them level. Glentoran’s Emily Wilson was particularly impressive, forcing a number of errors and turnovers for her side with her pressure.

Celtic’s Hayes looked good in terms of distribution as she found Carusa in space, one on one with Rebecca Holloway, and the Northern defender fouled the American born forward taking the first caution of the game in the process.

Hayes was also proving to be a fantastic target from set pieces, she found herself on the end of two corners, from McCabe and Lucy Quinn but wasn’t able to find the net with either chance. The second effort was well saved by Turner, but disaster struck for the visitors from the resulting corner kick.

McCabe’s delivery was half cleared by the head of Rachel Furness but only as far as Lucy Quinn loitering on the edge of the box. Her powerful effort was deflected off the outstretched leg of Furness past Turner to open the scoring for the home side on the half hour mark.

The Republic of Ireland continued to create chances and it took a fantastic goal line clearance from Sarah McFadden to keep her side in the game. McCabe’s cross was met by the head of Denise O’Sullivan which found the back of Demi Vance, Lucy Quinn sent another rocket goalwards but McFadden’s got her right leg in the way and cleared the ball off the line to leave just a single goal between the sides at the break.

The second half would start in similar fashion when Kyra Carusa got on the end of a bouncing ball that wasn’t dealt with by Holloway. Her goalbound effort was stifled by Turner but the goalward bound deflection needed another goal line clearance from Demi Vance to complete the save.

Substitute Abbie Larkin who grew up in the shadow of the stadium almost grabbed a goal just after the hour mark when she met McCabes cross with a left foot volley but the ball went just wide of the post.

Disaster struck for the visitors on 69 minutes when a long ball over the top resulted in a complete mix up between Holloway and Turner in goal with the defender’s touch leaving an open goal for Kyra Carusa to score from 30 yards. The Irish forward made no mistake to double Eileen Gleeson’s side’s lead and secure all three Nations League points for the home side ahead of their trip to Hungary for Match Day 2.

A Lily Agg header would seal the victory for Gleeson’s side as the late substitute met McCabe’s corner and the ball was adjudged to have crossed the line by the assistant referee after rebounding off the inside of the post.

Northern Ireland could have had a penalty shout themselves when a Caragh Hamilton cross appeared to come back off the hands of Tyler Toland in the box in injury time, but the referee once again didn’t blow the whistle.

The Republic of Ireland now find themselves comfortably top of Group B1 of the Nations League with a visit to Budapest to face Hungary to come on Tuesday.

  • 85'

Substitute Lily Agg finds the net, just. Her header from a Katie McCabe corner comes off the post and is collected by Turner but the assistant referee's flag indicated the ball had cross the line for a third for the home side to seal all three points.

  • 69'

And the hammer blow arrives. A defensive mix up between Holloway and Turner gifts Carusa an opportunity to roll the ball into an empty net from 30 yards and she duly obliges to double the home side\'s advantage. It\'s been coming but Northern Ireland have only themselves to blame on this one.

  • 68'

The North have managed to get a bit of momentum, good work from Joely Andrews and Simone Magill creates a rare foray into the Republic's box but they can't capitalise.

  • 66'

McCabe and substitute Abbie Larkin almost combine. The captain's fired cross is sent goal ward by the local youngster but her volleyed effort is wide of the frame.

  • 65'

The crowd are in fine voice here as the physios leave the pitch and play resumes. Turner resumes her role between the sticks for the North.

  • 64'

The North's keeper is down again for treatment. Hard to see exactly how it happened but it might be a hangover from the first half injury.

  • 63'

Another Rachel Furness header takes the ball off the head of Hayes who arrived late in the box from McCabe's corner.

  • 62'

Penalty shout for Ireland as Lucy Quinn is bundled over in the box but the referee isn't interested. The Republic of Ireland continue to have all the possession, territory and chances here.

  • 59'

Abbie Larkin replaces Heather Payne for the Republic of Ireland

  • 48'

The second half is barely started when Ireland have another chance to double their lead. A long ball isn't dealt with by Holloway and Carusa latches on to it. Her goalbound effort is cleared by a combination of Turner in goal and the covering defender Vance who clears it off the line.

  • 45'

Half Time: Republic of Ireland 1-0 Northern Ireland. A deflected Lucy Quinn effort is the difference between the sides.

  • 45'

Two minutes to be added here!

  • 44'

A glorious oppourtunity to double the lead as McCabe's center was met by the head of O'Sullivan, her effort bounced off Demi Vance's back and Lucy Quinn snatched at the effort from 12 yards out. A fabulous goal line clearance from Sarah McFadden saved the visitors goal from being breached a second time.

  • 39'

A Megan Connolly setpiece delivery causes havoc in the box but the North clear it eventually. The hosts are clearly in control of this clash now.

  • 37'

Another McCabe corner headed clear by Furness lands at the feet of Lucy Quinn but her chipped effort goes over the cross bar. Chance for a breather for the visitors.

  • 34'

Tyler Toland on her first appearance for Ireland since Colin Bell's departure has a pot shot from distance but doesn't connect well and it spins out for a throw in at the corner flag. The North are under heavy pressure here but are battling well.

  • 31'

Rachel Furness gets a head on McCabe\'s delivery but it falls to Lucy Quinn on the edge of the box and her effort is deflected off Furness to the back of the net. Ireland take the lead.

  • 30'

Hayes once again is the target from a corner as Lucy Quinn finds her unmarked at the back post. A good save from Turner gives the hosts another corner.

  • 27'

The Republic of Ireland are really growing into this now. Lucy Quinn plays it back to McCabe who fires in a cross but Payne's header goes harmlessly wide. The home side are beginning to grow into the game and create some chances though.

  • 26'

Turner is helped back to her feet and seems to pass the fitness test on her leg. The Wolves keeper is the only player involved today currently playing outside of the top two divisions in their countries' national league.

  • 24'

Good work from O'Sullivan forces a corner, McCabes delivery is met by Hayes who's header is helped on by Karusa. Keeper Shannon Turner gets a block with her legs and it's cleared as the keeper gets some attention for an injury in the save.

  • 23'

McCabe blasts the ball into the stand housing the travelling fans, a waste of a good set piece opportunity for Ireland.

  • 21'

A lovely through ball from debutant Hayes releases Carusa but she's upended by Rebecca Holloway who receives the first caution of the game for her troubles.

  • 20'

The North are taking every opportunity to slow the game down as the frustration starts to show for the Republic. Katie McCabe shoves Marissa Callaghan over unnecessarily and kicks the ball away.

  • 18'

Emily Wilson has been very impressive for Tanya Oxtoby's side as her pressure is forcing mistakes and turnovers from the home players.

  • 16'

O'Sullivan and Carusa are causing a bit of chaos in the North's defence but so far they have coped well with the pressure and the runs from Ireland's forward threats.

  • 14'

Caitlin Hayes has looked decent on her first ever appearance for Ireland. The Glasgow Celtic defender secured her eligibility yesterday and was immediately added to the starting eleven.

  • 12'

Kyra Carusa breaks through the defence but was clearly offside. She get's called back by the assistant referee.

  • 7'

The referee is having a word with Megan Connolly and Rachel Furness as they jostle in anticipation of a goal kick.

  • 5'

Both sides are feeling each other out here. The Republic are controlling most of the ball at the moment but aren't getting anything easy from the visitors.

  • 1'

Northern Ireland get us underway but their first foray into the home half ends up in a harmless cross which goes behind for a goal kick.

  • And we are underway for a record setting first ever appearance at the Aviva Stadium for the Girls in Green.
