Match Report
A second half brace from Rola Olusola and a Jenna Slattery stunner saw Galway United overcome Champions Peamount by a margin of three in the Drom Soccer Park this evening. After a cagey opening half, Galway hit a purple patch in a half an hour window during the second stanza, enough to inflict just the second defeat of the season to the Champions. Deserved result in truth for Galway, they looked that bit better throughout and reaped the rewards scoring those decisive goals. Peamount, maybe with a title winning hangover having not played in three weeks, struggled to create chances and at the back could not deal with Galway playing in behind. It was a slow enough start to proceedings with early possession the aim for both sides. Galway did have a fair share more of the possession and were looking to cause Peamount issues being camped in their half. Jenna Slattery had a free kick sent just over the crossbar, while a few minutes later Rola Olusola looked to beat the offside trap but was hauled down by Niamh Coombes outside the area. From the resulting free kick Slattery delivered to the back post where Jamie Erickson headed wide. Six minutes later in the 27th minute Galway had a huge chance to take the lead, Isabella Beletic headed a Slattery corner toward goal that Dearbhaile Beirne blocked on the line, before the rebound from Beletic needed Coombes to save. Coomes went off with an injury shortly after the half hour mark, Niamh Reid Burke on in her place, she was busy minutes into her call from the bench, Galway were exploiting the Peamount defence with balls in behind, Reid Burke had to scamper out to clear the danger ten minutes from the break. Having spent a lot of time on the back foot, shy of the interval, it looked like Peamount almost took the lead, Avril Brierley getting into the Galway area but Abbiegayle Ronayne got a strong hand to deny the forward putting the visitors ahead. Just two minutes after the break the deadlock was broken, Kate Thompson played a beautiful ball in behind for Olusola to race onto, Reid Burke raced out to clear the danger, but the Galway forward had time to shoot to the back of the net. It was no more than Galway deserved, it gave them the confidence and the drive to play with their tails up as Peamount were now playing on the back foot. Rarely have we seen the Champions have to come from behind and twenty minutes later the lead was doubled. Thompson again the provider, Olusola with the finish. Thompson with a lovely over the top ball that the Galway forward showed great skill to get on the end of and take her time before striking low past Reid Burke. The Tribeswomen were commanding proceedings and just six minutes later they made it three, Olusola turning provider to play an outrageous rabona pass to the edge of the area where Slattery fired a beautiful effort to the top corner. Game set and match with 15 minutes left. Peamount pressed until the very end, Freya Healy with their best chance that Ronayne saved well with her feet. That result should see Galway claim fourth but the 7pm game this evening will tell a lot.Second Half Surge Hands Tribeswomen Victory
