Match Report
A goal in each half by Sadhbh Doyle, ensured Peamount remained top of the table, as they overcame Galway United in PRL Park this afternoon. League leaders Peamount United welcomed Galway United to PRL Park for match day 10 of the League of Ireland Women’s Premier Division. And it was the home side that took the initiative early with Galway’s Jessica Berlin forced into making a smart save in the fifth minute. The league’s top goal scorer Kate Mooney came close soon after, her shot whistling just wide of the upright. Around the half-hour mark, the game sprang into life when Galway’s Aoife Thompson burst through on goal and hit the side netting with her sliced shot. Moments later Kate Mooney intercepted a loose pass in the visitor’s defence and crossed into Erin McLaughlin, but her header flew harmlessly wide. Just before half-time, the home side broke the deadlock when Sadhbh Doyle finished from close range. The pressure had been building on the Galway Girl’s defence and it finally cracked mere seconds from the interval. No doubt manager Phil Trill will have been preparing a different type of team talk before that goal went in as his side had done well in keeping the game tight. Early in the second half Lauryn O’Callaghan weaved her way through a couple of Galway defenders before cynically being taken down by Gemma McGuinness just outside the box but the resulting set piece amounted to nothing. The away side had a soft penalty claim waved away when appeals that a shot from Anna Fahey hit a Peamount defender’s arm were ignored. Soon after in the 58th minute, Doyle scored her second goal of the match when she tapped in a cross at the back post to put the league leaders firmly in the driving seat. Galway decided to make a change in an attempt to try mixing things up, bringing in Rola Olusola for Anna Fahey and it almost paid off as the substitute rattled the crossbar when the ball dropped to her inside the box. Both sides kept up the tempo in their pursuit of goals as the game entered the final quarter but there were not to be any more additions to the scoreline. This win keeps The Peas on top of the table, one point ahead of Shamrock Rovers and three clear of champions Shelbourne.Doyle Keeps Peas On Top Spot
