Flannery Penalty Keeps Robins Unbeaten

Kate Flannery’s second half penalty proved to be the deciding factor as UL Bohs continued their unbeaten run with a narrow win over Railway Union.

Railway had built up a 7-0 lead shy of half time but a strong comeback in the second half by the hosts changed the dynamic of the contest and the outcome.

Eilis Cahill crossed from close range in the second half as UL got on the board with Flannery levelling matters from the tee. A few minutes later Flannery was accurate from close range of the tee to put three between the teams and from there the hosts battled hard to keep their lead.

Weather conditions made play tricky in the first half, from the start Railway pinned Bohemians into their own half and struggled to make it out of their own half.

A stiff breeze gave Flannery a tough time in trying to clear the lines as wave after wave of Railway offence was causing issues. The electric combination on the wings of Chisom Ugwueru and Clara Barrett were trying their best to race down the channels but were given few yards by the Dubliners.

Numerous handling errors cost UL Bohs in that opening stanza, when they did get forward and pinned Railway back it failed to materialise a score as the ball was turned over at the breakdown. Railway were hitting ground well and Nikki Caughey was launching the ball into the UL half that was testing Aoife Corey at full back.

Aimee Clarke was just one of their electric runners who was trying to force the opening score, with a strong lineout game always playing into their hands, the visitors were looking menacing when they launched an attack.

The pressure told shy of the break Railway using their forwards to put intense pressure on the Bohs backline and Molly Boyle powered her way over for the games opening try. Caughey landed the extra points on offer for a big momentum shift for the visitors.

Bohs were littered with errors in the half and towards the latter stages of that period of play tried to score prior to the break but again they lost possession and had to build again after the half time deliberations.

Fiona Hayes made a string of changes at the break as Eilis Cahill, Lily Brady and Jane Clohessy came on to help strengthen the pack while Aoibhin O’Flynn came in to replace Barrett who suffered a knock.

Ugwueru was another injury worry going off for Laoise McGonagle late in the opening half, the strength of depth and never say die attitude was an intense performer as UL shone in the second half.

The changes in the pack caused Railway nightmares at scrum time, UL applied pressure early and having got close to the try line a scrum on the quarter of an hour mark in the second stanza would soon spell trouble for Railway.

Penalty after penalty going the way of the hosts as Railway were doing everything to keep the hosts out. In the end they saw yellow for Patricia Doyle and down to 14 Bohs smelled blood. Confining their savage onslaught on the Railway backline the pressure was too much and Cahill powered her way over for the Bohs try. Flannery converted and we had a level game.

Five minutes later UL kept that savage pressure on with the numerical advantage in hand they were doing their best to create another score another infringement awarded a penalty for the hosts and Flannery wasted no time dissecting the uprights and scoring her 68th point of the campaign so far.

Railway threw everything but the kitchen sink at trying to take the contest, using their bench also as Niamh Byrne made her return for the first time this season to try influence the way but Bohs just had enough in the tank.

It was not just an individual performance from the hosts that got them over in this one, 1 to 22 they showed savage work rate from start to finish and with seven wins in succession are a serious prospect this season.

UL Bohemian v Ballymena

UL Survive Late Ballymena Surge To Take Points

In a nail biting finish in Annacotty, UL Bohemian showed incredible defensive prowess to keep Ballymena out in the dying embers to seal their fourth win of the campaign.

A slogfest from start to finish it looked like the 14 men of Ballymena had done enough to take victory in this contest in the dying seconds with their attacking intent almost warranting a winning try.

UL camped their line and showed incredible discipline to keep their visitors out and score another important win in this campaign.

Not enough to rise from fourth as Barnhall took a losing bonus point to keep them in third spot in the standings. While for Ballymena they sit ninth three points adrift of safety.

Harry Byrne gave UL the ideal start, kicking two penalties for a 6-0 lead in the opening ten minutes. It looked like it was going to get even better as Tom Cullen raced toward the try line and as the young hooker crossed he knocked on in the process and Ballymena had a lifeline.

Bohs kept the pressure on but some errors in their handling cost them trying to future the lead in the opening half. Ballymena had few ventures into the UL 22 but the boot of Pierce Crowe was giving them ground in the UL half.

From another penalty to touch Ballymena would strike for their opening score. A terrific lineout gathered steam toward the UL try line and after numerous phases of intense attack without a score, captain Adam Lamont dotted down for their opening try. Crowe had his conversion crack the right upright as the hosts took a one point lead to the break, 6-5.

Into the second half and Bohs certainly had their tails up trying to snatch the lead and when Adam Lamont went to the bin they had a chance. Bryne found touch and after a terrific maul from the lineout, Liam Neilan broke and crossed for their try. Bryne three from three gave the hosts a 13-5 margin.

No sooner had Bohs furthered their lead Ballymena hit back. From the restart the danger was not cleared a smart thinking from Ballymena scrum half Roshan Weerarathne taking a tap go penalty too quick for UL to react and he powered over for their second try. Crowe nailed this conversion however and the gap was back to one.

Discipline would soon cost the visitors however, losing Louis McGuckian to yellow and then Weerarathne to red for high tackles. With 13 men on the field they kept battling but another three pointer from Byrne edged the hosts ahead.

The final minutes were energy sapping as Bohs defended for their lives as Ballymena were using their killer scrum to effect. After holding off a wave of onslaught it looked game over as Ballymena powered over but were held up over the line and that was the heart-breaking conclusion to an incredible contest between these two.

UL Bohemian v Dungannon

Robins Fightback Sees Them Fly Another Day In 2A

UL Bohemians are staying up in AIL Division 2A as a stirring second half saw them edge out a gutsy Dungannon by 20-16.

It had looked like mission impossible at the break but this remarkable eighty minutes showcasing the AIL’s undoubted drama and potential for nail-biting!

Although the hosts named Ireland underage international Evan O’Connell at lock, Dungannon clinically steered the tie in their direction despite trailing to a Harry Byrne penalty ten minutes in.

McCaughey swiftly levelled the scores with his first strike before a strong visiting scrum earned him a second striking opportunity, one he successfully took to edge Dungannon 3-6 ahead.

The promotion-chasers had their opponents on the ropes and just on the quarter-match mark, landed a potentially knockout blow.

Another scrum penalty, this time was kicked to touch, the lineout executed well which allowed an unstoppable maul, lock James McMahon the man with the game’s first crucial five-pointer, McCaughey accurate again for a seven-point score.

With the Limerick crowd desolate, McCaughey added further woe to the forefront of fans’ minds with his third penalty, leaving Dungannon in control at half time.

However, the Annacotty faithful had a miraculously, if jittery, second half recovery to savour!

Within three minutes of the restart, Bohs were banging the door to the tryline down, eventually bursting through courtesy of Alan Kiely’s sniping burst, Byrne’s conversion hauling them to within six, and more importantly, one try.

Dungannon, besieged by pressure, wilted when the hosts scored a quickfire second try.  It mirrored the first half away move, a cool, calm lineout met by a powerful maul, the player to dot down as yet an unconfirmed hero!

Byrne’s heroic composure with the boot was being celebrated to the rafters though, the fly half demonstrating immense calm to slot the critical conversion which nudged Bohs back in front.

There had been a huge momentum swing and visiting flanker Stephen Todd was sent to the sin bin.

Summing up their second half however, was the very last play before they were restored to fifteen, Dungannon found them reduced to fourteen again, Cameron Steenson this time shown yellow.

Unable to get anything going, Bohs went for the jugular but despite coming short of a third try due to Dungannon’s resilient efforts, a Byrne penalty two minutes from time meant they had all it to do at the other end.

Their last attacking lineout was successfully taken but immediately the ball was turned over to spark the ultimate contrast of emotions.

Jubilance for the home players, leaping delightedly into each other’s embraces, crushing dejection for Dungannon given their thirteen-point interval lead.

But given the tragic loss of Senior Coach Billy Brown, just two weeks ago today, they should be commended for such a fine playoff performance at all.

UL Bohemians are staying up in AIL Division 2A, rescued by a surreal second half, seventeen unanswered points and Limerick will, for sure, be out partying to celebrate tonight.
