Leinster Romp Home To Opening Interpro Win Over Ulster

Leinster have secured a hugely dominant 57-5 win over Ulster in the second round of the Vodafone Women’s Interpros this afternoon at Energia Park in Dublin.

The hosts enjoyed an impressive first-half performance with prop Christy Haney scoring twice and other tries from Ruth Campbell, Aimee Clarke and Molly Boyne to send the hosts in 33-0 at the break.

Niamh Marley hit back for Ulster in the second half, but it proved to scant consolation as further tries from Katie Whelan, Leah Tarpey, Eimar Corri and Aoife Wafer in the second half secured an impressive win for the hosts.

With both sides trying to bounce back from losses last week, it will be Leinster coach Tania Rosser who will be by far the happier of the two coaches following this game. Following a spirited performance from his Ulster side last week, Murray Houston will have plenty to work on with his side as he seeks to rebuild ahead of their clash with Connacht next week.

It did not take long for Leinster to get up and running with a try from prop Haney who crashed over under the posts and number eight Hannah O’Connor, who was on kicking duties, added the extras.

Leinster’s dominance in terms of both territory and possession continued, with Ulster conceding a number of penalties at the breakdown.

Another try looked inevitable when Leinster worked their way up the pitch with a number of pick and goes, before supplying second-row with the ball to finish the move with a low drive over the line to extend her side’s lead.

The hosts continued to go up through the gears and looked increasingly confident as they stretched Ulster’s defence. O’Connor threw a superb miss pass out wide and winger Clarke finished in the corner.

A yellow card for Ulster captain Cregan did not help matters and Leinster took advantage of the extra player once again working their way up the pitch and it was prop Haney who barged over for her second try of the game.

Ulster continued to struggle to contain Leinster as half time approached and Molly Byrne added to the misery with a try converted by O’Connor to send Leinster in 33-0 up at the break.

Scrum-half Whelan got her side off to the perfect start after the break, with a well-taken break-away try and it looked as though the floodgates may be well and truly open.

However, Ulster fought back and after a number of phases of attack a brilliant cross-kick from Abbey Moyles found Niamh Marley on the wing who finished well.

Yellow cards in the second half for Corri and Dalton looked like they may signal a momentary change in momentum, but it wasn’t to be. Centre Tarpey scored next for Leinster despite her side being two players down and this was followed by a well-taken score from second row Corri.

Blindside flanker Wafer rubbed salt on the wounds with a try for the hosts in the last play of the game to seal a comprehensive win for Tania Rosser’s impressive Leinster side.
