CBC End Four Year To Book Munster Final Appearance

CBC have advanced to the Munster Senior School's Cup Final after a five point winning margin over Crescent College in Thomond Park this afternoon.

The champions are out, despite a spirted comeback in the first semi final they would fall in the replay, despite a late score time was not on their side.

CBC now end a four year wait to make a final having shared the 2020 title with Pres, it is them who they meet in Musgrave Park to see who is the 2023 champion.

Straight from the kick off Crescent would see a man into the bin, number seven Andrew Ahearne tackling Daniel Rock in a mid air collision, lucky not to see red for the incident.

From that penalty CBC were able to put pressure on and move up the other end of the field, another strong lineout moving them closer to the CCC line, with their powerful forward line they drive well and from close range and once again it was Adam Wrona the power hooker who burst over in the far left corner. 5-0 on the board after four minutes as Ben Lynch missed the conversion.

While Crescent were down to 14 CBC took full advantage, Wrona again the man to get their second try his fifth in the competition, as they doubled the advantage after seven minutes as Lynch again had a difficult task to convert.

As Ahearne had come back, CBC were the next to see a man go to the bin, Evan Cahill Murphy binned for a high tackle, a beautiful move followed from the penalty, kick to touch and the lineout maul drove CBC back and over went Fionn Casserley for their pening try, but despite his efforts the last day Eoin O’Callaghan missed the mark.

With momentum with Crescent it looked like they wuld come back and get the next chance, but after Lynch struck a sensational 50:22, they had a lineout in a dangerous area, it has been a key set piece for them and after the maul formed they huffed and puffed and drove back Crescent as Rock touched down for the try. Leading 17-5 as Lynch nailed the kick, he added three more off the tee to make it a 15 point margin.

Crescent looked to come back and almost had a stroke of luck as Ryan Godfrey had a bounce favour him to break through the CBC defence, he sped down the left wing but Lynch produced a try saving tackle, they won back possesion and went to the opposite wing and after more pressure they were awarded a penalty try, as Michael Foy went to the bin after the half hour mark, game back on as Crescent trailed 20-12 at the break.

CBC started the second half brighter as a lovely kick in behind by Ronan O’Keeffe was gathered by Chrstopher Barrett, beating his man he raced in and had all the time to come inside and dot near the posts, giving Charlie Patrick O’Shea an easier shot at goal as he replaced Lynch for the kicking duties as he went off at the break.

Again Crescent hit back swiftly, again it was their maul but this time it was Charlie Fenton who touched down, their maul game is strong and at the breakdown they know what to do, and O’Callagan converted the try to put the lead down to eight once again.

Christians looked to have hit the breakthrough for another try as Cahill Murphy opportunistically put a boot in to kick a loose ball from a mistake by Crescent, he took it soccer style along the turf but Jed O’Dwyer did enough to put the ball down for a dropout.

Pressure remained and after a tap and go penalty taken by Sam Loftus he powered over for their next score, the conversion good seeing them build a lead 34-19. O’Callaghan hit a penalty after the hour mark with 12 points the difference and minutes left could they do it again?

The answer was no, despite Mark Fitzgerald getting a late converted try, time was not on their side and the defending champions bow out, as CBC march on for an all Cork final against PBC in Musgrave Park.
