CBC And Crescent College Comp To Do It Again Next Week

CBC and Crescent College will have to do it all over again next week in Thomond Park, as late tries by Cathal Lanigan Ryan and Eoin O'Callaghan snatched a draw having been behind 15-3.

The wait continues for CBC for a final appearance, 2019 the last as Covid saw the 2020 crown shared and defeat to PBC last year left them waiting to go again, but they'll have to wait another week to try and go for silverware.

Tries from Adam Wrona and Christopher Barrett, along with five points from the boot of Benjamin Lynch, looked to have done enough but late tries salvaged a draw for Crescent.

The replay will be played in Thomond Park next week date and time TBC as CBC advance first, PBC or St Munchins can now punch a ticket to the decider as their tie will be played on Leeside at 1:30pm tomorrow.

The early exchanges were physical, both teams hitting hard knowing what was at stake, both has that little bit of extra venom as they tried to turnover possession, Crescent threatened early, a penalty kicked to the corner by Ryan Godfrey gave them possession inside the CBC 22, their lineout and maul formed well but Sam Loftus the CBC prop robbed them of possession with a terri steal as he charged down field.

Crescent had the first real scoring chance of the opening half, another penalty awarded at the breakdown, this time they pointed to the uprights, Eoin O’Callaghan tasked with striking a monster penalty from just out the CBC 10m line,  he had the distance but the kick just drew right and wide.

CBC had a solid defensive line in the opening quarter, Crescent bombarded them but the line never looked like faltering to allow crescent in for a try, their ill discipline was costing them as a yellow card was brewing, they dispossessed Crescent from their own lineout after another penalty found touch, on the second attempt Crescent somehow just managed to keep the ball, after some phases they drew close to a score, again an illegal bit of play and Eanna McCarthy was sent to the bin.

Crescent opted to tap and go from the penalty, their forwards powering digging their heels into the turf trying to get inches to reap rewards, they looked over but held short and after another drive the lost possession and CBC managed to clear, they worked it back up the other end and got a penalty inside the 10m line a reward for some ruthless defending.

Benjamin Lynch placed ball on the tee looking for the first CBC core having spent the majority of the half to that point camped near their own goal line, like O’Callaghan he had the distance but the long range effort drew wide. Lynch would have a second chance at the posts after Crescent were guilty after the restart from the first penalty, the second kick was no but easier but Lynch split the posts with a beauty for a three point lead after 23 minutes.

CBC now had the momentum, they were able to spend time in the opposite half of the field, s smart kick to the corner got them into range and put pressure on Crescent, they did well to win the lineout and clear but the CBC charge was back knocking on the door, another penalty to touch saw their lineout form shy of the line, the feed and resulting maul was perfect and as they drove back Crescent alarm bells sounded and Adam Wrona managed to touch down for the opening try, Lynch saw the kick drift wide but an 8-0 advantage for the hosts had them comfortable.

Crescent pushed for a late score but their opponents were just too strong, they had the possession but were unable to really cause danger and with that CBC took the eight point margin into the break.

Some nerves creeped into the CBC gameplan after the restart, a handling error allowed O’Callaghan a free shot at the posts from close range, he made no mistake and less than a minute into the second half Crescent got their first score.

CBC looked a little sloppy early but they would come good five minutes later, Lynch kicking to drive Crescent back, the ball bounced awkwardley and the Crescent defence could not capitalise on the loose ball and a offload wide to Christopher Barrett saw the TY student over for their second try, Lynch landed the conversion and CBC were 12 points to the good.

Worry for Tommy Crowe will be that captain Eanna McCarthy hobbled off injured in the 45th minute, a huge influence in that backline the captain and leader of the team, his loss will be felt for the reply if the injury is more serious.

As we entered the final twenty minutes, Lynch had another shot at the posts to further increase the CBC lead, but the strike just curled to the left and Crescent were able to gather and clear but wer struggling to create chances.

We would of course have late drama as Cathal Lanigan Ryan powered over near the end of regulation time, O’Callaghan missed the conversion but in the dying seconds he got over in the corner and then struck a conversion near the sideline to level.
