AIL Roundup: Women’s Energia Cup Week 9

Following the final weekend of action in the Energia Cup series, the line-up for the three finals in the Energia All-Ireland Women’s Cup have been confirmed with the action to take place on Sunday April 23rd.

Ballincollig 7-83 Galwegians, Tanner Park

Galwegians finished 3rd and will have home advantage in the Plate Final, after a convincing win over Ballincollig.

They ran in six tries in a dominant opening half, Orla Dixon and Mairead Coyne both added braces in the half, with Ursula Sammon and Laoise McGonagle also crossing. Nicole Fowley added five conversions to make it a 40-0 lead.

Coyne completed her hat trick in the second half, which was followed by Dixon also adding a third, Maria Gorham added the next try as they moved 59-0 clear. Olivia Haverty ran from half way to score in the 50th minute, while Roisin Ormond crossed for the hosts as Denise Redmond added the conversion. 

Sammon, Grace Brown Moran and Gemma Faulkner hit a try each late on, as the blue belles ran in 12 tries as they chase silverware

Suttonians 17-15 Cooke, JJ McDowell Memorial Grounds

Suttonians avoided finishing bottom after they worked hard to topple a strong Cooke side.

Tries from Carrie O’Keefe and Molly Fitzgerald gave them a five point cushion at the break, Chloe McMorran getting over for the visitors to leave it 10-5.

Helen McGhee and Teah McGuire crossed for the Belfast side in the second half, but Catherine Martin’s conversion from a Lena Kibler try proved to be the deciding score.

Blackrock College 36-5 Wicklow, Stradbrook

In the heavyweight tie in Stradbrook, Blackrock came out on top and with it edged their spot in the Plate Final, as Wicklow host Belvedere in the Shield Decider.

Rock down on numbers showed their clinical nature from the off, Shannon Heapes getting over for an unconverted try, Sarah Gleeson replied for Wicklow but it proved their only score of the contest. Eimear Corri and Alanna Fitzpatrick added tries for a 15-5 lead at the break.

As the second half got underway Blackrock really flexed their muscles, Maeve Liston, Aoife Moore and Abby Moyles ran in tries to finish off the tie, with Moyles adding three conversions in the second half.

UL Bohemian 28-0 Old Belvedere, Annacotty

The tie between UL and Old Belvedere was not played as Belvo conceded the game and as per regulation 10.4 are deducted 5 points in the table. As per regulation 10.6, a scoreline of 28-0 was applied and UL Bohemian were awarded 5 points in the standings.

UL Bohemian will contest the 2022/23 Energia All-Ireland Women’s Cup Final, while Belvedere still have their spot in the Energia All-Ireland Women’s Shield Final.
