AIL Roundup: Women’s Division Round 7

Railway Union’s winning streak came to an end at the hands of Old Belvedere, seeing UL Bohemians as the only unbeaten side left in the division. Blackrock occupy second as a result, while elsewhere Wicklow got their first win of the campaign.

Blackrock College (8T) 48-0 Ballincollig (0T), Stradbrook

Blackrock moved to second spot in the standings after a convincing bonus point result over Ballincollig in Stradbrook on Saturday evening.

Opening half tries from Emily Whittle, Aoife Wafer, Róisín Crowe and India Daley, alongside conversions from Ella Durkan saw the defending champions take a 24-0 lead to the dressing rooms.

A strong performance in truth from Rock and they never let up in the second stanza, Hannah O’Connor, Catherine Martin, Andrea Murphy all crossed for tries before Crowe who was not named in the original match day squad called up as a late replacement for Ellen Boylan, crossed for a second try, Durkan struck two further conversions in the second half.

Cooke (2T) 14-17 Wicklow (3T), Clement Wilson Park

Saoirse O’Reilly inspired Wicklow to their first win of the campaign as a hat trick of tries edged her side past Malone in a hard fought encounter.

O’Reilly did cross for an unconverted try in the opening half, tires however from Ilse van Staden and Aishling O’Connel converted by Amanda Morton had the hosts ahead 14-5 at the break.

That spark from O’Reilly proved the real difference, crossing for her second try Beth Roberts converted and the deficit was just two points. As the half wore on, O’Reilly rounded off her leading role for Wicklow as she touched down for her third try, Wicklow battled well in those final minutes to hang onto the lead for a deserved win.

Galwegians (1T) 5-12 Suttonians (2T), Crowley Park

Suttonians needed a Mary Healy try in the second half to help secure the result against Galwegians in a low scoring contest in Crowley park.

The Galway side, still looking for a first win of the campaign and in a cagey low scoring opening period, were breached by Brenda Barr, her unconverted effort giving the visitors a 5-0 lead at the interval.

Hannah Clarke would cross for Wegians in the second half, but the aforementioned Healy did snipe over for a second Suttonians try and the conversion from Lauren Farrell McCabe left a margin of seven by full time. A first point for the Galway side coming from a losing bonus result.

Railway Union (0T) 3-6 Old Belvedere (0T), Ashtown Lane,

Railway’s unbeaten streak came to an end on Saturday afternoon as the boot of Jemma Farell proved the difference as Belvedere took the spoils in a low scoring contest.

In a closely fought opening half a penalty from Railway out-half Nikki Caughey proved the difference going into the break as Railway led 3-0. Plenty of action flowing at both ends but not enough to warrant further scores.

Farrell has been strong from the tee all season and when her side needed her most she delivered. The first penalty tied the contest and the second gave Belvo a narrow lead that they fought to preserve to the bitter end.
