AIL Roundup: Women’s Division Round 6

UL Bohemians enter a week break six wins from six top of the standings by nine points with another impressive bonus point result, Old Belvedere made ground as the meeting of Wicklow and Railway fell ill of the bad weather.

Ballincollig (1T) 5-69 UL Bohemian (11T), Tanner Park,

With six wins from six UL Bohs have started as they mean to go on this campaign, another high scoring performance with the prolific Chisom Ugwueru getting a hat trick to take her try tally to 12 for the season.

The Red Robins were dominant from the off and with 20 minutes gone built up a 10-0 lead with Ugwueru and Beth Buttimer both crossing. As the half wore on Eilis Cahill and Chloe Pearse crossed to secure the bonus point, 24-0. Ugwueru added her second and third try before the half time whistle sounded as the visitors were ahead 36-0.

Cahill added her second try soon after the restart before Ballincollig registered a score with Michelle O’Driscoll crossing. Clara Barrett marked her return from International commitments to add the eight try of the contest and the home side were 50-5 ahead. A brace from Ciara O’Dwyer either side of a Laoise McGonagle try rounded off the contest in style for the Limerick side. Kate Flannery also added to her impressive points tally with 14 for the afternoon coming off seven conversions.

Old Belvedere (7T) 48-7 Cooke (1T), Ollie Campbell Park

With Railway now in action due to a postponement, Belvedere now sit second in the standings following their fourth win in a row, producing a commanding result against Cooke.

From start to finish it was Belvo in complete control of this contest. Ruth Campbell crashed over for the opening try that Jemma Farrell converted. Farrell would soon strike a penalty to further the hosts lead before Emma Tilly produced a fantastic bit of skill to cross for their second try seconds later, Farrell converting for a 17-0 lead. It was 22-0 by the interval as Minnona Nunstedt crossed in the corner.

Ten minutes into the second half Belvo added the bonus point, Katie Corrigan running the length of Ollie Campbell Park to cross for the fourth try. No sooner had Farrell converted the score she was on hand again to convert a second from Tilly four minutes later.

On the hour mark Cooke got on the board, the veteran Ilse van Staden crossing and Amanda Morton making no mistake to add seven to the board. Belvedere finished in style with Grace Tutty supplying a terrific carry for Nunstedt to get her second try. At the death Vanessa Hullon with a cameo of the bench on for just five minutes crossed for the seventh and final try.

Suttonians (2T) 12-33 Blackrock College (5T), JJ McDowell Memorial Grounds

Blackrock got back to winning ways with a 21 point margin seeing them overcome Suttonians on Saturday evening.

Once they took the lead in the contest they looked composed to not squander that advantage and leading 21-7 at the interval they did the majority of the hard work in the opening stanza. Emily Whittle, Shannon Heapes and Catherine Martin all crossed for the visitors with Abby Moyles renaming prolific from the tee striking all three conversions.

Leomie Kloppers crossed for Sutts in the opening half with Lauren Farrell McCabe ensuring they had seven on the board. Kerry Browne added a second try in the second half but it was just not enough to counter the firepower Rock had. Hannah O’Connor and Mya Alcorn furthered the holders advantage in the second half with Moyles adding one more conversion.

Wicklow P-P Railway Union, Ashtown Lane

The meeting of Wicklow and Railway was postponed due to unplayable pitch conditions, this will be replayed at a later date.
