AIL Roundup: Women’s Division Round 5

With Round 5 of the Women’s Division coming to a conclusion, UL Bohemians made it an impressive unbeaten start with a maximum points haul, Blackrock’s unbeaten run came to an end at their hands, while Railway Union also remained unbeaten after four.

UL Bohemian (5T) 29-10 Blackrock College (2T), Annacotty

Chisom Ugwueru stole the show in Annacotty as her four tries saw Blackrock’s 14 game unbeaten streak in the league come to an end.

The early exchanges were cagey with the opening score arriving after 20 minutes with Ugwueru crossing for an unconverted effort. 15 minutes later Ugwueru crossed for her second and Kate Flannery landed the conversion for a 12-0 half time lead.

Catherine Martin crossed for Blackrock to score first in the second half but that effort was soon cancelled out with Ugwueru crossing for the hat trick on the hour mark. Five minutes later Abbie Salter-Townshend finished off a flowing move for the bonus point try, Flannery converting to put 19 between the sides.

Cliodhna O’Sullivan cut the deficit with another unconverted try for the visitors but Ugwueru had the final say crossing for her fourth try right at the death to keep UL firmly atop the standings after five rounds of action.

Cooke (0T) 0-44 Suttonians (8T), Clement Wilson Park

A statement win by Suttonians as they picked up their second win of the season with a eight try shutout against Cooke.

Lauren Farrell McCabe crossed for a brace while Leomie Kloppers, Meabh O’Brien, Peita McAlister, Emma Jordan, Mary Healy and Lena Kibler all crossed in the commanding win. Aoife Brenna and Grainne Tummon shared the kicking exploits with a conversion each.

Leading 22-0 at the break it was a statement result for them after a couple of difficult weeks, they now have two wins in fight league outings.

Galwegians (3T) 19-33 Old Belvedere (5T), Crowley Park

Belvedere moved to third in the standings with their third win of the campaign overcoming Galwegians in Crowley Park.

For Galwegians it was one of their best performances of the season, despite being a fifth straight defeat, it was a much improved showing than recent weeks. Leading 7-5 at the break they struggled to grab scorers in games previously and a brace from Orla Dixon along with Hannah Clarke crossing and two Sinead O’Brien conversions kept them in the contest.

Belvedere had a game earlier in the week and showed no signs of fatigue from that meeting with Suttonians, running in five tries a brace from Jess Keating, while Jade Gaffney, Emma Tilly and Grace Tutty crossed the whitewash. Jemma Farrell landed four from five conversions.

Railway Union (8T) 46-10 Ballincollig (2T), Ashtown Lane

Railway Union continued their 100% start to the season with an eight try win over Ballincollig as the Cork side suffered a first defeat of the campaign.

With UL also going unbeaten thus far, Railway have kept the pressure applied with another vintage performance. Tries from Roisin Ormond and the debutant Brighid Twohig had Ballincollig behind by 14 at the break, they soon faded in the second.

Railway are out to regain the league title and having led 24-10 they continued to charge in the second half. Keelin Brady bagged a brace while Molly Boyne, Grainne O’Loughlin, Ava Ryder, Stephanie Carroll, Aimee Clarke and Alais Diebold all crossed to keep the tie in their favour. Nikki Caughey landed three conversions from the tee.
