AIL Roundup: Women’s Division Round 4

UL Bohemians kept up their impressive start to the Women’s Division with their fourth bonus point haul, Blackrock rose to third as they also continued to remain unbeaten.

Ballincollig 18-17 Wicklow, Tanner Park

Ballincollig continued their impressive start to this year’s Women’s campaign with a narrow one point win over Wicklow.

Wicklow have shown that they are very much competitive despite three defeats in a row and at the break were ahead 17-10, Erin McConnell, Eimear Douglas and Saoirse O’Reilly all crossing for tries, with Beth Roberts adding a conversion.

Ballincollig had two tries under their belts in the opening half through Ciara Fleming and Aoife Fleming crossing. Into the second half the hosts started to take control and with minutes gone in the second half Sinead O’Reilly added a third try, followed by Shaniqka Wall landing a penalty. The hosts held out for their third win of the campaign.

Blackrock College 55-5 Galwegians, Stradbrook

With a nine try haul under their belts, Blackrock continued their impressive unbeaten start to their title defence with a commanding result over Galwegians in Stradbrook.

Rock moved to third with an unbeaten record in as many games with a bonus point scored also to complete a maximum points haul. Amelia McFarland, Maeve Liston, Abby Moyles, Shannon Heapes, Beth Cregan, Emily Whittle, Koren Dunne, Hannah O’Connor and -Ellen Boylan all ran in for tries, while Moyles slotted three conversions from the tee.

Another tough loss it has to be said for Wegians, Eve Tarpey grabbing their only score of the contest in the second half, four defeats on the trot now for the Westerners. The writing looked on the wall as they trailed 31-0 at the break but failed to really pressure Blackrock in the second stanza.

UL Bohemian 57-5 Cooke, Annacotty

With Railway on a bye week, UL Bohs picked up a fourth consecutive bonus point win to move them top of the standings after round four. 

Bohs were bright from the start and led 19-0 by the 20 minute mark as Chisom Ugwueru crossed for a brace of tries with Aoife Corey also crossing the whitewash. Kate Flannery continued her exploits on the tee kicking two conversions.

Shy of the break the Red Robins had their bonus point secure and moved 29-0 clear, Brianna Heylmann and Beth Buttimer crossing to further the hosts hold on the contest. Into the second stanza and it was more of the same by the hosts, Eva McCormack and Muirne Wall crossed while Corey bagged a brace. Heylmann became the third UL:player to score a brace near the death. Flannery added four conversions in the second half to keep up her points haul.

Old Belvedere 31-5 Suttonians, Ollie Campbell Park

Belvedere made it two wins from three as they overcome Suttonians on a wet Tuesday evening in Ollie Campbell Park to take a bonus point result.

With 23 minutes on the clock Emma Tilly raced over for the games opening try showing tremendous speed to race down the right wing evading the tackles and scoring. The conversion was wide for the only score of the opening half.

Four minutes into the second half and the lead was doubled, Aine Donnelly crossing from close range and Jemma Farrell slotted the extra two. With Belvo temporality reduced to 14, Sutts ran in for their opening score to cut the gap to 12-5 following a missed conversion.

Belvedere pushed on in the final twenty minutes, Minnona Nunstedt, Elise O’Byrne-White and Donnelly all crossed for tries, with Farrell kicking two more conversions.
