Roundup: AIL – Men’s Division 1A

Round 13 of the AIL Division 1A brought a number of thrills as teams battled in crucial clashes at the top and bottom of the table.

Clontarf and Lansdowne picked up crucial victories as the battle for 1st place heats up Division 1A. While Terenure College extended their winning run with a win against Garryowen in Limerick.

Clontarf 22-14 Young Munster, Castle Avenue

League leaders Clontarf picked up their 12th win of the season as the hosts edged Young Munster 22-14 at Castle Avenue.

Clontarf raced into a 19-7 lead at the break, before Josh Wycherley raced in for a score after the interval. However, that proved to be as good as it got as Conor Kearns slotted over a late penalty to earn Clontarf the points.

Dublin University 15-20 Lansdowne, College Park

Luke Thompson’s 60th minute try sealed a crucial win for Lansdowne away in Dublin, despite ten points from the boot of Dublin University’s Aran Egan.

Dublin University closed the deficit to three points with 30 minutes left, until Thompson’s try from a driving maul sealed the points for Lansdowne, who find themselves five points behind Clontarf in first.

Garryowen 18-17 Terenure College, Dooradoyle

Terenure College extended their winning run to nine games as they edged Garryowen 18-17 at Dooradoyle.

Terenure College fought back from a 17-3 deficit to score 15 unanswered points, with a late unconverted score from Levi Vaughan giving the visitors a slender win in Limerick.

UCD 31-31 Cork Constitution, Belfield

Eighth placed UCD pulled off a shock as they held fourth placed Cork Constitution to a 31-31 draw at Belfield.

A 72nd minute try from Niall Kennelly and a difficult conversion from Aidan Moynihan levelled things with eight minutes remaining, but neither failed to capitalise on the time remaining as the teams shared the points.

UCC 9-19 Ballynahinch, The Mardyke

Nine points from Greg Hutley proved to be the difference as Ballynahinch edged UCC 9-19 at The Mardyke.

Three penalties from the boot of Daniel Squires reduced the deficit to 9-12, but that proved to be as good as it got for UCC as Hutley’s 73rd minute try sealed the win for Ballynahinch.
