Super Suttonians deliver AIL Conference title

Suttonians were crowned AIL Conference Competition champions after a 26-0 win over Galwegians at Energia Park.

Tries from Jessica Kelleher, Nicole Carroll, Emily McKeown and Catherine Martin sealed the title for the side from the capital.

It was an extremely tight and well matched first quarter of an hour with both sides showing their threat going forward in the early stages. Orla Dixon and Nicole Fowley looked dangerous from the opening minutes for Wegians, but it was Suttonians who took the lead after just over 15 minutes.

After phases of possession and some big carries from Mary Healy and Carrie O’Keefe, out half, Nicole Carroll opted to spread the ball wide into the awaiting arms of Jessica Kelleher who crossed for the first try of the game.

Suttonians increased their lead right on the half hour mark after a penalty from Carroll.

The Dublin side’s out half was involved again just moments later after Suttonians gained yards after some fantastic carries from Mary Healy again. Lauren Farrell McCabe popped the ball into the path of Nicole Carroll who scored the second try of the game to give her side a 13-0 lead at the break.

Suttonians continued to dominate from the beginning of the second period and their efforts were rewarded when Emily McKeown embarked on a wonderful solo run around the Galwegians defence before diving over the line to score her side’s third try of the evening.

Wegians did continue to try and get in the game and winger Saskia Morrissey looked dangerous every time she found the ball in her hands.

After Mairead Coyne was sin-binned for a high tackle on Molly Fitzgerald, the Connacht side struggled to retain possession after a couple of phases.

Nicole Carroll took her tally to 11 points after a well struck penalty mid-way through the second half.

Carroll was heavily involved yet again just moments from time and it was her pass that sent centre Catherine Martin through for Suttonians fourth try of the game and to seal the AIL Conference title.
