AIL Roundup: Women’s Division Round 3

UL Bohemians and Railway Union both secured their third bonus point win of the campaign with strong result at the weekend, Railway taking top spot with another one sided encounter. Ballincollig and Blackrock make up the top four.

Suttonians (0T) 3-38 UL Bohemians (6T), JJ McDowell Memorial Grounds

UL Bohs continued their impressive start to the Women’s AIL season with a third consecutive bonus point win of the season.

Sutts took the lead through a Katelyn Faust penalty, once they got going UL took control. On the half hour mark Chisom Ugwueru crossed for the opening try, Kate Flannery converting for a 7-3 lead. Five minutes later Chloe Pearse made it 12-3 with an unconverted try.

Into the second half Stephaine Nunan made it 19-3 after Flannery converted her 45th minute try, Flannery scored an intercept try on the hour mark to secure the bonus point and extend the visitors lead to 26-3. Abbie Salter-Townshend bagged a brace late on to cap off an impressive win.

Galwegians (1T) 5-63 Railway Union (11T), Crowley Park

Railway Union picked up another impressive result of the campaign, three bonus points win and plenty of high scoring results to boot.

Wegians had another tough defeat on the board and found themselves on the back foot in the opening half, Railway ahead 29-0 at the break before continuing to push on in the second half.

Rhiann Heery scored a hat-trick, while Ailsa Hughes and Deirdre Roberts bagged a brace each, Aimee Clarke, Patricia Doyle, Sophie Barrett and Faith Oviawe all crossed for a try each, Nikki Caughey added three conversions while Clarke also had a successful attempt at the posts. Eve Tarpey crossed for the Wegians try.

Cooke (2T) 14-24 Ballincollig (4T), Clement Wilson Park

Ballincollig remained in third spot following their second win of the season, taking another bonus point from a strong performance in Belfast.

The visitors built up a 19-0 lead by the break and failed to surrender that, two tries from Michelle O’Driscoll and one each by Kelly Griffin and Gemma Lane driving them to victory. Griffin kicked two conversions in the process.

Cooke through a penalty try and a Nimah Marley try converted by Amanda Morton fought back in the second half but just were unable to close the deficit.

Wicklow (2T) 10-27 (4T) Blackrock College, Ashtown Lane

Blackrock made it two bonus point wins in a row but were pushed well by Wicklow for large parts of the contest.

Amerlia McFarland gave the visitors a 5-0 lead after a lineout maul saw Rock run the phases before McFarland scampered over on the right wing. Beth Cregan made it 12-0 after he crossed the whitewash Abbey Moyles converted. Alabnnah Dixon was swift to reply and cross to make it 12-5 at the break.

Into the second half Ellen Boylan raced down the right wing to extend the lead to 17-5 55 minutes into the contest. Naoise O’Reilly replied with a  try in the corner with 15 minutes left in the contest.

Rock finished the game with style, Hannah O’Connor landed a penalty before playing part in the bonus point try, O’Connor and Shannon Heapes will claim the assist for Creegan sniping over for the bonus point and her second try.
