AIL Roundup: Division 2B Week 5

Greystones foot hold on the summit of 2B remains intact after a fifth win of the season, while elsewhere Galway Corinthians climb to second with Belfast Harlequins falling down to fifth.

Belfast Harlequins 14-14 Wanderers, Deramore Park

It was hard to separate Belfast Harlequins and Wanderers as they played out a draw in a close encounter in Deramore Park.

A dramatic encounter that saw Harlequins score the first and last try of the game, they controlled the opening period and were 7-0 ahead by the interval.

Back came the Wanderers and two converted second half tries had them 14-7 ahead punishing some poor decision making at times by the hosts, however late drama as Harlequins got over for a late try, the touchline conversion was nailed over, the result sees them drop to fifth.

Galway Corinthians 43-10 Enniscorthy, Corinthian Park

Galway Corinthians produced an emphatic statement to climb up to second in the league table, with Enniscorthy on a five game losing streak to start the season.

It looked by the opening half performance that we were in for a tight game in Galway, Daniel Pim got over for Scorthy to lead 7-0 early before two Corinthians tries saw them go into the break leading 10-7.

Corinthians added another five points after the break with a well taken try, before adding another minutes later to increase their lead, Scorthy notched a penalty in between to make the score 22-10.

The Galway side ended the game well with three more tries to inflict another tough loss on the Wexford side.

Malahide 31-27 Dungannon, Estuary Road

Malahide came from behind to claim a huge scalp against Dungannon, which sees them up to seventh in the table, thanks to a solid second half performance.

Dungannon raced into a 10-0 lead before Malahide crossed for a converted try to reduce the deficit, the visitors landed a late penalty to lead by six points at the break.

A penalty brought Malahide within three but Dungannon came to life and crossed for their second try of the afternoon, the hosts stayed with them and crossed for a second try themselves minutes later.

Back to being behind by three, they were soon ahead with their third converted try seeing them move 24-20 ahead, it was a lead they never lost as they capped off the bonus point toward the end of the half, Dungannon made it a nervy end as they crossed once more but the hosts held firm.

Rainey Old Boys 26-15 Galwegians, Hatrick Park

Rainey Old Boys are in the top four of 2B after an impressive showing against Galwegians, four defeats now this season for the Galway side who have struggled to hit form.

It was not smooth sailing for the hosts as they were behind 10-0 in the early exchanges of the tie, they replied well to end the second half ahead with two converted tries putting them 14-10 ahead at the break.

They added a third after the break to pull out their lead further in the tie, both added unconverted tries toward the end of the tie as Rainey recorded a valuable bonus point win.

Sligo 15-35 Greystones, Hamilton Park (Strandhill)

Greystones put in another strong performance to keep them atop the table after a fifth successive win on the road in Sligo.

Darragh Feehily opened the scoring for Sligo early with an unconverted try as they took an early lead, Killian Marmion brought Greystones back into the tie with a converted try to lead 7-5, they stayed on top and Ross Nichol doubled their lead after crossing under the posts.

Cathal Finneran touched down in the corner to reduce the arrears, but two further Greystones tries gave them the bonus point and a 28-10 lead at the interval. They controlled the second half adding a fifth try, before Andrew Ward on his AIL debut crossed for Sligo’s third.
