AIL Roundup: Division 2A Week 5

After a dramatic draw with Navan, Queens University remain leaders of 2A level on points with Blackrock College. While Old Crescent recorded a first win of the year in the Limerick derby.

UL Bohemian 25-27 Old Crescent, Annacotty

In the Limerick derby on Shannonside, Old Cr3scent recorded their first win of the season in a narrow win over UL Bohs.

Crescent were out of the traps quicker as Ronan Mckenna slotted an early penalty before Kevin Doyle got a converted try after ten minutes for a 10-0 lead. It was nip and tuck as both added a converted try before Harry Byrne landed a penalty to see Bohs trail 17-10 by the half hour mark. Bohs crossed for an unconverted try in injury time to leave the score 17-15 at the break.

Byrne kicked Bohs into the lead eight minutes into the second half, Crescent replied with unconverted tries from Shane Mullally and Dean O’Grady to lead 27-18 after 68 minutes. UL made it a nerve wracking final ten minutes as they crossed for a converted try leaving two points between the teams, Crescent held on to claim the win.

Cashel 27-0 Ballymena, Spafield

Cashel rose to third in the table after a whitewash win over Ballymena, the result moves the Ulster side down to sixth in the table.

The hosts converted an early penalty, before a penalty try saw them 10-0 to the good, they were solid and attacked well to build the lead further, crossing for three more tries before the final whistle.

MU Barnhall 12-21 Blackrock College, Parsonstown

Blackrock have continued their title push with another strong win in the division, edging Barnhall on the road this weekend.

Barnhall raced into a 7-5 lead by the break, as Blakcorck needed to come back, they did so and controlled the game in that second period of play as Barnhall only managed a singular try.

Navan 24-24 Queens University, Balreask Old

After a jaw dropping end to their game last weekend, we had another classic involving Queens this weekend, as Navan came back from the death to snatch a draw.

Queens dominated the first half and with the board reading 17-5 at the break, it looked like they were going to extend that further in the second and put the tie to bed.

They would extend their tally for the game but certainly failed to put down a relentless Navan side as they snatched the draw late on, Queens remained top thanks to score difference as both recorded bonus points in the tie.

Nenagh Ormond 27-15 Dolphin, Sat November 5th, New Ormond Park, 2:30pm

Nenagh climbed up to fifth in the table with a bonus point win over Dolphin, the result a great boost for Nenagh as they are three points outside of the top four.

The hosts were in great form in the opening half leading 19-8, they furthered this by remaining that step above Dolphin in the second not letting them come back into the tie.
