AIL Preview: Division 2B Week 17

With the title secured all eyes are on promotion, third and fourth spot have not been a guarantee yet, with plenty of competition still existing, at the bottom Galwegians and Enniscorthy battle for ninth spot.

Galway Corinthians V Galwegians, Fri 31st March, Corinthian Park, 7:30pm

In the Galway derby, Corinthians look to finish with a winning run in the division as Galwegians are playing for a spot in the relegation play-offs.

Corinthians had their grip slip off the league title last weekend as that headed to Wicklow, they secured second spot, 2A awaits them next season if they can overcome the play-offs but will they want to rest in these final weeks ahead of those games is the question.

Wegians were in the same boat last season, needing a relegation play-off to keep them in 2B, sitting bottom now however they need a result here if they want to try and once again claw their spot in the division.

Belfast Harlequins V Rainey Old Boys, Sat 1st April, Deramore Park, 2:30pm

In the Ulster derby at Deramore Park, it’s all about fourth spot in the table, as fourth entertain fifth.

Belfast Harlequins will want to win this tie as they will hope to stay one step ahead of the chasing pack in the race for the play-offs, they could also jump higher should Dungannon lose.

Rainey suffered defeat to Sligo last weekend, if they stuff another one in succession it will see them tumble down the rankings with how tight it is beneath, they are aiming not to make it four game losing streak.

Dungannon V Greystones, Sat 1st April, Stevenson Park, 2:30pm

With the visitors playing for nothing, it is all up to hosts Dungannon to keep their spot secured in the top four.

One slip up and Dungannon can drop a spot, another one in the final round and they may just miss out on the play-offs, they are looking to make it three wins in a row, with just one loss in their last five they will be confident.

Greystones were crowned 2B champions last weekend, the final two weekends are just an afterthought now as 2A beckons for them next season, these last games can be used to test out players for next season as their unbeaten record came to an end.

Enniscorthy V Wanderers, Sat 1st April, Alcast Park, 2:30pm

Looking for the lifeline that is 9th spot, Enniscorty will want a result here but Wanderers can still fight for promotion.

Scorthy were a solid outfit in 2C last year and deservedly came up in the end on the Covid format, now they may have to win a play-off to stay up in this division, wins have not been frequent but knowing where Galwegians sit ahead of kick off will be a key motivation.

Wanderers chances are complicated but a chance is still there, they sit four behind the Belfast side, it could come down to a straight shootout between the two on the final day, 2B is ever easy to call this season.

Malahide V Sligo, Sat 1st April, Estuary Road, 2:30pm

Sligo will be another close challenger to Rainey and Harlequins if they can overcome Malahide.

The hosts are safe from the drop but a win would take them to 40 points, which would see them ahead of Rainey if they lost, winning three from their last five they have shown form and will look to test Sligo.

After weathering the storm against Rainey last weekend, Sligo target the top four, they will need a result to go their way and that would be to see Rainey win and hope neither side would pick up as bonus point, a draw in that game would see Harlequins on 43, meaning a bonus point win for Sligo would put them also on 43 however the score difference would see them stay behind them.
