Roundup: AIL – Men’s Division 1B


Round 12 of the Energia All-Ireland Division 1B got underway on Saturday afternoon, with four games to savour and two high-scoring thrillers. 

Highfield edged Banbridge at Woodleigh Park, while Old Wesley eased past Old Belvedere at home. While Malone and City of Armagh was cancelled due to coronavirus cases. 

Navan 28-36 St Mary’s College, Balreask Old

Two tries each from Richard Halpin and Myles Carey helped St Mary’s College to a 28-36 win away at Navan. 

Ryan O’Loughlin’s 78th minute try sealed the win for the visitors after Navan fought to within one point with minutes remaining.

Old Wesley 22-7 Old Belvedere, Donnybrook

Old Wesley maintained their lead at the top of Division 1B as they cruised to a 22-7 win at home to Old Belvedere.

Tries from James Jeremiah O’Dea, James O’Donovan and Ben Burns helped the hosts to a comfortable win on Saturday.

Malone vs City of Armagh, Gibson Park

Both teams had to settle for two points each as the game at Gibson Park was called off due to coronavirus cases within the Malone squad.

City of Armagh find themselves in sixth place in the table and Malone are eighth, just four points ahead of Banbridge in ninth. 

Naas 38-29 Shannon, Forenaughts 

Gary Kavanagh scored twice as Naas powered their way to a 38-29 win over Shannon at Forenaughts stadium.

Lee Nicholas’s 75th minute try reduced the deficit 31-29 to give Shannon a glimmer of hope, but a late try from Naas’ Tim Murphy ensured the hosts would leave with the spoils.

Highfield 19-8 Banbridge, Woodleigh Park

Paul Stack’s two tries proved to be the difference as Highfield edged struggling Banbridge 19-8 at Woodleigh Park. 

Banbridge briefly threatened a comeback in the second half as they trailed 14-8 before Stack’s second of the day sealed the points after 78 minutes.
