Roundup: AIL – Men’s Division 1B

Round 17 of the Energia All-Ireland Division 1B brought an exhilarating round of action.

The highlight fixtures of the weekend saw Old Wesley battle St Mary’s College and Malone square off with Naas at Gibson Park.

Malone 33-16 Naas, Gibson Park

Naas crashed back down to earth as Malone produced arguably their best performance of the season to defeat Naas 33-16.

The visitors produced a superb display to defeat second placed Highfield last weekend, but there was no repeat of those heroics as they were undone by a fierce Malone team.

Tries from Dan Kerr, Aaron Sexton, Callum Smith and Callum Smyton proved decisive,  as Malone picked up just their third win of the season and their first win since November 20th.

Highfield 57-7 Navan, Woodleigh Park

Highfield rebounded from their disappointing loss to Naas as they produced a blistering attack display to beat Navan 57-7 at Woodleigh Park.

The result was never in question as Highfield finished with a whopping nine tries in what was arguably their most dominant outing of the season.

Highfield came out of the sheds firing on all cylinders as they raced into a 19-0 lead, before Navan reduced the deficit to 19-7. However, that proved to be as close as it got, as the hosts added a further six tries to send the home crowd home happy.

Old Wesley 22-15 St Mary’s College, Energia Park

Old Wesley claimed their 16th win of the season as they edged St Mary’s College 22-15 at Energia Park.

Number eight Reuben Pim was the star of the show for Old Wesley, as the back-rower scored a try, conversion and a penalty to lead all players with 10 points.

The win sees Old Wesley stretch their winning run to 11 games, which has seen them avoid defeat since their 20-7 defeat to Highfield on the 20th November and take an unassailable 15 point lead at the top of the table.

Old Belvedere 29-37 City of Armagh, Ollie Campbell Park

Dylan Nelson scored twice as City of Armagh produced a thrilling display to beat Old Belvedere 29-37 at Ollie Campbell Park.

10 tries were scored on an exhilarating afternoon in Dublin as City of Armagh returned to winning ways, following their 29-20 defeat at Shannon last weekend.

Banbridge 6-31 Shannon, Rifle Park

Shannon scored four tries as they picked up a comfortable 6-31 win over Banbridge at Rifle Park.

The hosts threatened an upset as they kept Shannon within two points at the break. However, the visitors turned it on after the break as they scored three tries to ease to a comfortable win.
