Preview: Division 1A/1B Promotion/Relegation Play-off

The chance to play 1A rugby next season is up for debate as the play-off rounds get underway this weekend as Old Wesley, Garryowen and Old Belvedere all look to take the spot of Shannon next season.

Old Wesley v Garryowen, Saturday April 18th, Energia Park, 2:30pm

Just last month Old Wesley defeated Garryowen in Energia Park, if they can do that again they are one step closer to promotion, Garryowen will have different ideas as they look to return to 1A.

What a story Wesley has had this season. Deducted points due to playing an ineligible player at the start of the season, sat at the basement end of the table hoping to avoid a relegation battle. Now they are second having been on a tremendous run of form that has them as a front runner to go up. Can they keep that momentum going now as we reach this exciting conclusion.

Garryowen who finished bottom of 1A last year bounced back this season and winning on the final day over Highfield ensured they ended the season in the playoffs finishing third. The Limerick men have a dynamic squad of youth and experience which makes them an exciting proposition going into this stage of the competition. Winning this meeting in Dooradoyle earlier this season, can they avoid another defeat in the Capital at the hands of Wesley.

Shannon v Old Belvedere, Saturday April 18th, Thomond Park Back Pitch, 2:30pm

Another relegation battle for Shannon and a first meeting in over two years with Old Belvedere is going to be an interesting contest for both on Shannonside.

The hosts were here last season and after two tough games against Old Wesley and Highfield they managed to stay in 1A. This year it all starts with Old Belvo and a meeting with Wesley or Garryowen will follow with a win. This is not going to be easy as Shannon have not been in great form all season but does have that resilience in these must win games.

Many might not have expected Belvedere to make the playoffs with how well Highfield and Garryowen were doing going into the final day. Belvedere with a bonus point win ensured their status in the playoffs and arrive looking to dine at the top table next season. With how well they can play certainly they can give Shannon a game, the Limerick men won both of their last meetings but that is a distant memory now for both sides.
