Crescent College Comp deliver Munster Senior Cup

For the 12th time in their illustrious history, Limerick’s Crescent College Comprehensive secured the Munster Senior Schools Cup with a 26-5 victory over Presentation Brothers Cork.

The Limerick side had tries from Brandon Nash, Jed O’Dwyer, Oscar Davey and Max Clein, while Davey kicked three conversions for the local side.

Thomond Park was awash with noise but it was Comp who settled better and ultimately ran out convincing winners.

These sides clashed on the Thomond Park back pitch in January, with Comp edging the tie by just one score, but today, they held the 28 time winners at arm’s length once they struck the front.

Tries on 18 and 23 minutes from Nash and O’Dwyer did the damage, from which the Cork side could never recover from. Before that, however, O’Dwyer mad a superb recovering tackle to deny Harry Coughlan just five meters out. The out-half spotted a gap from half-way and was agonisginly short of the opening score.

When Nash went in on the right wing following a lovely Connall Henchy pass, Comp were dreaming. Then O’Dwyer made a memorable burst off the back of a lineout to double the lead. Oscar Davey showed his kicking prowess with two well taken conversions.

The early pressure came from wind assisted Comp kicking a lot, with PBC struggling to deal with this tactic. It remained 14-0 at half-time.

When Henchy sent Davey over on 41, the destination of the Garrett Fitzgerald Cup was known. A reply did come from Danny Sheahan but that was as good as it got for Ger Bourke’s side. They were able to fight back late on in their semi-final but Comp were solid in seeing this home.

Indeed, Max Clein rubberstamped victory. He blocked a clearance and gathered before touching down near the bulk of a very vocal Crescent Comp support.

There was time for both sides to empty their benches and the day belonged to those in black, white and blue. A first senior cup title since 2014, when they went back-to-back.
