Match Report

Ireland come good to down stylish Fiji

Ireland have recorded an 11th successive win at the Aviva Stadium, coming from behind to defeat a strong Fiji side, with three new names added to the list of test internationals.

Five tries in the end as Fiji like last weekend felt the fire of the referee, two yellow cards and a red card shown for them left them on the back foot for a lot of the tie.

Ireland march on as another solid performance gives them a good momentum boost ahead of Australia in a weeks' time.

Ireland started off on the backfoot and had a massive let off in the opening minutes not to be behind, Teti Tala struck it well but his kick pulled left of the posts. Three minutes later they would be behind after a beautiful flowing move by the Fijians.

Fiji hit Ireland with a great attack down the left hand channel, the pass inside to Kalaveti Ravouvou was on point for him to get over the line for a 7-0 lead after five minutes. Ireland well and truly were dazzled by the visitors in the early minutes in the Aviva and a double blow saw Robbie Henshaw come off injured.

With a quarter of an hour gone Ireland sprung into life as Nick Timoney powered over the line as his teammates helped him over, five men involved in the move before Timoney crossed, Joey Carbery on hand to tie the game after 15 minutes.

From here the early nerves went away as Ireland got the momentum, Kieran Treadwell looked to have barged his way over but he was just held up, a great defensive effort by Fiji. The hosts would have a second bite of the cherry as Manasa Saulo was sin binned and a penalty awarded.

Carbery opted for touch and from the driving maul after a well taken lineout, saw Timoney get his second try after 20 minutes, Carbery doubling the Irish lead with another conversion attempt.

A huge issue for Ireland all afternoon was giving away penalties, their fourth of the half allowed Tala to reduce the lead to four points, as he was successful off the tee for the second time out of three attempts.

Momentum never left Ireland, they attacked once more as the eclectic Jimmy O’brien raced for the line, he was caught just short and a terrific offload wide by Jamison Gibson-Park Robert Baloucoune allowed the Ulster winger to easily score in the corner. Carbery with a sweet strike near the sideline made it an 11 point lead, 21-10.

Just five minutes before the initial 40 would be signalled on the clock, Jack Conan looked to have touched down for the fourth try, initial dancing feet from Baloucoune got Ireland some extra ground near the line, the ball went wide but Conan was in touch as he grounded, Ireland ahead 21-10 at the break.

It was a slow start to the second off but Fiji would be permanently down to 14 at the minimum as Albert Tuisue, was shown a red card for a high no-arms tackle on Carbery, the fly-half replaced as a result with Jack Crowley making his first appearance as a senior international after 46 minutes.

Ireland made the advantage caught but it took time to break down Fiji, just after the hour mark the dominant scrum came good once more and Craig Casey spotted Mack Hansen out wide as the Connacht winger dotted in the corner for the fourth try, Crowley got his senior points tally off to a start nailing the conversion for a 28-10 lead.

Fiji were down but far from defeated, Ireland once again caught napping as they broke clear of the defence, wide man Jiuta Wainiqolo produced a sensational one-handed offload to see his replacement scrum half Simione Kuruvoli gallop under the posts, the extras added by Ben Volavola, 28-17 after 63 minutes.

The fifth try came after 73 minutes the veteran Cian Healy with his 11th try in green, the experience shown as he did well from close range to pump the legs and power over the line, Crowley making it four points off the tee, a solid start to his career in the green jersey.
