Match Report

Back-to-back wins for Leinster

Leinster have recorded back to back victories in the United Rugby Championship, overcoming Ospreys 29-7 at a wet and windy RDS.

Leo Cullen will be happy with their strong showing in both defence and attack, getting a bonus point in the end.

A welcome return for James Lowe off the bench having injury issues along with international commitments, the winger scoring a beautiful solo try, while Cian Healy also crossed back from the Irish camp.

Jordan Larmour gave them a spark early on with the opening try, Scott Penny managed to cross late on for their final effort. Ospreys failed to gather momentum in the tie to challenge the Irish province, Rhys Webb getting their first score after an hour of play.

Leinster started brightly, attacking the Ospreys try line but an illegal move saw Ross Byrne handed an easy penalty, after they were penalised for hands in the ruck, the fly half making it 3-0 after four minutes.

After the penalty there was little to separate the teams as they both put pressure on the defence, after running the phases, Leinster had their opening try through Larmour, a great grubber kick by Bryne chased perfectly by his winger, giving them an 8-0 lead after 21 minutes.

Four minutes later Scrum Half Luke McGrath crossed over for a second Leinster try, but the TMO had ruled the try out due to two knock ons in the build up to the score.

Just before the half hour mark Morgan Morris was sent to the sinbin for Ospreys, too many fouls committed by the Welsh opposition, straight back from International duty Healy powered over from the maul for their second try, Byrne making it a 15-0 lead from the tee.

Ospreys managed to hold on for the remainder of the half as Leinster looked composed, to push on and continue their dominance in the tie, the 15-0 lead the margin at the interval.

Leinster welcomed back Lowe after 53 minutes in the second half, he was only on the field four minutes before he produced a wonderful solo run to skip past the Ospreys defence and cross for their third try, Bryne’s conversion made it 22-0 before the hour mark

Ospreys managed to breach the Leinster defence after the hour mark, Scrum Half Ryhs Webb with a lovely shimmy to get past the Leinster challenge, the conversion was good helping to reduce the gap.

For the remainder of the contest it was all Leinster as they looked to add more to their tally, after running the phases and having tries ruled out or being short, it was Penny who added the bonus point with a try after 73 minutes.
