Match Report

Cardiff stage smash and grab win over Leinster

Jarod Evans left it late but was the hero in the end as he secured the points for Cardiff with a late penalty, as they secured a 29-27 win over Leinster in the Welsh capital this evening.

Evans was on hand to kick two conversions and four penalties the last one being a monster 50 metre monster, Owen Lane and Hallam Amos crossed for tries for the Welsh club.

Leinster will feel hard done by as they looked likely to take the win, as they had a late penalty put them into the lead, Ross Bryne looked to be the winning kicker but it was Evans who proved the match winner in injury time.

Byrne gave Leinster a solid start away from home, the fly half landing a 40 metre penalty to give them a 3-0 lead after two minutes.

It took until the 20th minute for the hosts to get on the board, after intense pressure by both sides it ended up being a penalty from the boot of Evans which tied the game at 3-3.

The penalty settled their nerves as 50 seconds later Lane ran on to an Evans over the top kick, the winger ran at pace to evade the Leinster defence and cross for their opening try, Evans conversion making it 10-3 swinging the momentum in their favour.

Leinster replied within three minutes of the hosts try, Adam Byrne collecting the offload before he showed sheer pace, sprinting behind the Cardiff defence to cross for their opening try, Bryne making the conversion look easy to tie the game at 10-10.

Ben Thomas took the kicking duties from Evans on the half hour mark, the fly half off due to a head injury, the centre making no mistakes to land the kick from distance to pull out a three point lead, making it 13-10 a lead they managed to hold until the half time whistle.

Evans was back on kicking duty after the restart, he kicked a penalty three minutes into the second half, giving them a six point advantage with Leinster chasing themselves early on. The fly half made it a nine point game five minutes later, the kicker showing his class from the tee.

Cardiff were dealt a double blow after 50 minutes, number 8 James Botham sent to the bin for a cynical foul, before substitute hooker James Tracy crossed over after ten phases of play, to give Leinster a lifeline, with Byrnes conversion making it 19-17.

The Irish province took full advantage of the man advantage, from a lineout five metres out from the Cardiff line, they worked the set play well with Scott Penny collecting at the back and running toward the line to score, Byrne having an exhibition as he kicked his third conversion to make it 24-19.

Cardiff managed to score their second try with ten minutes left, Harry Byrne failing to react to a box kick, the loose ball gathered and taken up the field by Cardiff, the end result had Amos sprinting across the try line to score, Evans conversion giving them a two point lead, 26-24.

Bryne reacted to going behind with yet another fantastic kick with minutes left, the fly half becoming Mr Reliable in the evening's tie, his kick giving them the lead by the minimum with minutes left on the clock.

Late drama occurred at the Cardiff Arms Stadium, the referee giving a penalty deep into injury time for a high challenge against Leinster, up stepped Evans who was clinical all evening, he made zero error in landing a massive kick 50 metres out from the target.

The result will leave Leo Cullen looking back on the footage as to what went wrong late on, the win snatched at the death in a game decided by the kicks of the fly half’s, Evans gives them a first win over Leinster in ten years.
