Match Report

Munster produce hard fought comeback to seal bonus point win

A dominant second half performance earned Munster a hard fought 17-31 win over Edinburgh, continuing their winning streak.

Tries from Rory Scannell and Calvin Nash either side of halftime helped Graham Rowntree’s charges get into the driving seat.

Edinburgh looked emotionally charged in the first half. Chris Dean, Darcy Graham and Jamie Ritchie all getting tries.

It was a positive performance from Irish international Joey Carbery who made an 18-point haul.

It was very fitting that at the start of the game they paid tribute to the great Doddie Weir by both teams putting down a number 5 jersey.

It didn’t take the motivated Edinburgh very long to register their first score. Backrow Luke Crosbie used some great footwork to burst through the middle with Dean on his shoulder, he linked up with his centre who ran in underneath the sticks. Blair Kinghorn added the extras. It was a dream start for the hosts.

The Scots were playing all the rugby in the early exchanges. On their second visit to the 22, they almost got in again. Scrum half Ben Vellacot nearly snuck in on the short side, but a great tackle from Nash bundled him into touch.

Scotland international Darcy Graham came into the game as the competition’s top try scorer this season. In the 12th minute, he scored his ninth try of the campaign after he intercepted a loose Carbery pass. He sprinted his way to the try line, giving his team an early 12-point advantage.

Nash made a great gather on the restart. They managed to keep themselves in the right area of the pitch for the next 5 minutes and eventually their pressure was reward. From an attacking line out a few metres short of the line, they got the maul going before Craig Casey took the ball and scored from close range.

With less than 7 minutes left in the half, the home side won a big penalty in the middle of the field. They opted for the corner.

The set piece provided the perfect attacking platform. The influential Dean put his number eight, Viliame Mata charging through the gap. He was eventually brought to ground. Some quick work around the corner from Dean and Kinghorm helped put Ritchie away in the corner as he wrestled his way to the line.

To their credit, Munster found an almost immediate response just on the cusp of the break.

They stole a line out in an ideal position and they made it count. A great Rory Scannell line saw him get over for their second try of the night. Carbery reduced the deficit to just 3 points on the halftime whistle.

The visitors started the second half exactly from where they left off. They worked their way into opposition territory and it only took a couple of minuses to score. Carbery taking the ball right up to the line, with lovely soft hands giving the ball to Nash who finished the move with a try.

It was clear that Munster started to assert their physical edge in this period. They had too much power for their opponents, scoring 24 unanswered points.

In the 52nd minute, Gavin Coombes barged over the line to secure the try bonus point.

The men in red looked comfortable and in control throughout the half. Substitutes Paddy Patterson, Patrick Campbell and Roman Salanoa all making an impact when they entered the fray.

Carbery who was solid on the night and flawless from the tee, scored the last 10 points with a penalty and a try of his own.

Things look to be on the up for the province as they’ve won 3 games on the bounce now. Next, their attention turns to Europe and the Heineken Cup next weekend.
