AIL Roundup: Division 2B Week 2

It was a gameweek 2 that had it all in Division 2B. From late game winning penalty tries to some fantastic comebacks, this week of Energia All-Ireland League action certainly didn’t disappoint.

Galwegians 21-58 Galway Corinthians, Crowley Park, Saturday October 8th, 2:30pm.

After taking an early lead inside the first ten minutes, Galwegians fell to another heavy defeat, this time at home to local rivals Galway Corinthians. It’s a second bonus point win of the season for Corinthians who are tied at the top of the table alongside Greystones. Next up for Wegians is a trip to Deramore Park to face Belfast Harlequins while Corinthians host Greystones

Greystones 25-15 Dungannon, Dr. Hickey Park, Saturday October 8th, 2:30pm.

Dungannon will feel the wrose of the sides today after letting a 15-6 lead slip. Tries from Nick Quirk, Danny Kenny and Ross Nichol as well as ten points from the ever reliable boot of Killian Marmion sealed an important bonus point victory for Greystones. They face a huge early season test next weekend away to Galway Corinthians who are tied with them at the summit of the table. Dungannon host Wanderers next weekend.

Rainey Old Boys 21-25 Belfast Harlequins, Hatrick Park, Saturday October 8th, 2:30pm.

A try five minutes from full time through Michael McCusker looked like he had given Rainey Old Boys their first win of the season, but in the final play of the game, Belfast Harlequins were awarded a penalty try. Quins have now made it two wins from two and host basement side Galwegians next. Meanwhile for Rainey Old Boys, they’ll be keen to get over their start of season poor run when they travel to Sligo.

Sligo 18-11 Malahide, Hamilton Park, Saturday October 8th, 2:30pm.

Sligo got their first win of the new season at Hamilton Park today in an 18-11 win over Malahide. After defeat to Belfast Harlequins in their opening game, it’s a welcome win for Paddy Pearson’s side. Tries from Kuba Wojtjowicz and Cal Goddard along with eight points from Euan Brown was enough for the Connacht men to seal the win. They host Rainey Old Boys next, while Malahide will hope to return to winning ways when they host Enniscorthy.

Wanderers 38-22 Enniscorthy, Aviva Stadium, Saturday October 8th, 2:30pm.

Wanderers bounced back to form after their defeat to Malahide in matchday one, with a bonus point victory at home to Enniscorthy. Despite dominating the early exchanges, they did allow their opponents back into the game midway through the second half, but it proved too big of a task for Enniscorthy, who are still searching for their first ever win in Division 2B.
