AIL Roundup: Division 2B Week 14

Enniscorthy picked up a huge scalp over Galway Corinthians while Galwegians are six points away from moving out of the bottom two places, Greystones are now nine points clear.

Galwegians 45-26 Rainey Old Boys, Crowley Park

Wegians picked up a statement win over Rainey in a high scoring curtain raiser for the weekend’s AIL action.

Kelvin Langan got over after four minutes for a 7-0 lead following the conversion. Five minutes later Shayne Bolton crossed for a 14-0 lead as again the conversion found its mark, it was all going the way of the hosts as Karl Waterman crossed after 23 minutes, they moved 21-0 ahead.

Just after the half hour mark they wrapped up the bonus point, Rob Deacy with a break from inside his half and in the finish Gary Duffy went over for the try, 28-0 ahead as another conversion sailed over. Andrew Sherlock added a fifth try just before the break as the hosts looked assured of victory ahead 33-0.

The wind remained in their sails just after the break, Ben McGuinness over two minutes into the second half to further increase the lead. Rainey would come back, two minutes later Conor Fitzsimons put them on the board with a converted try, two further tries had them trailing 38-19. 

After the hour mark Joe Agbo managed to get in under the posts for the final Wegians score of the afternoon, deep into added time Rainey crossed the whitewash for the fourth and final time ensuring they took something away from Galway.

Enniscorthy 26-24 Galway Corinthians, Alcast Park

Enniscorthy claimed a massive upset over top of the table chasing Corinthians, but the result still leaves them bottom following Wegians success.

It was the visitors who started much the better in the opening half, Finn McNulty and Harry Rogers added unconverted tries to give them an early advantage, McNulty added his second and this one was converted for a 17-0 scoreline. 

Nick Doyle crossed for a try to put Scorthy on the board after being 17-0 down after 12 minutes, Dominik Morycki further decreased the deficit as he got their second try which Jack Kelly converted.

McNulty wrapped up his hattrick and with it managed his fourth of the season as the Galway side moved 24-12 ahead with a bonus point to boot. Into the second half and the hosts came to life, captain Timmy Morrissey crossed for their third try and with that momentum they snatched the winner as Angelo Todisco powered over Ben Kidd landed two huge conversions to complete the comeback win.

Dungannon 14-21 Malahide, Stevenson Park

Malahide are up to seventh after overcoming the strong test of Dungannon this weekend.

Dungannon remaining in fourth spot will know for sure that they dropped points in this tie knowing how competitive the race is for promotion, while Malahide played with confidence and style and hope to stay clear of the drop zone.

Greystones 52-12 Sligo, Dr Hickey Park

Greystones now have a nine point gap at the summit of the table, following an eight try masterclass over Sligo.

Dave Baker, Mikey Doyle and Rob Byrne all crossed in the opening half for Greystones, while Sligo bagged a converted try from Daire Byrne before the break to make it 19-7. Into the second half and Greystones secured their bonus point try, before adding a further two as Sligo notched a second try from Brendan Cunningham to make it 40-12.

Towards the end of the half they would add another two to complete the dominant showing, a statement win for the side looking for 2A once again.

Wanderers 32-13 Belfast Harlequins, Merrion Road

Wanderers are now just two points off the top four spots in the table after a strong bonus point win over Belfast Harlequins.

Wanders now sit fifth after the result and with just weeks left will hope to push on after claiming the win as the Belfast side drop to sixth.
