AIL Roundup: Division 2B Week 13

Greystones lead at the top grew to six points after Corinthians slipped up, elsewhere Belfast Harlequins and Sligo are still within a shot at promotion. 

Belfast Harlequins 20-14 Enniscorthy, Deramore Park

Belfast Harlequins secured an important win to move them up to fifth in the table and keep a promotion push alive.

It was an end to end opening half, the hosts struck first with an unconverted try before Nick Doyle hit back for Scorthy, the conversion enough to put them ahead, but after Seb Pim went to the bin Harlies hit a second unconverted try to lead 10-7 at the break.

Peadar O’Mahony made it an excellent start for Enniscorthy in the second half after getting their second try, but two unanswered tries gave the Belfast side the bonus point and ensured they also took the win.

Galway Corinthians 21-24 Dungannon, Corinthian Park

Dungannon put a spanner in the works for Corinthians push at the title, as they put in a strong showing to remain fourth in the table.

Two converted tries and a penalty saw the hosts race to a 17-00 lead by the break, the Galway side replied soon after the break, Finn McNulty got their opening try before Oran McNulty made it a three point game.

Peter Rainsford continued their scoring flurry in the second half as he crossed for their third try, momentum was with them but late on Dungannon struck another converted try to take the points.

Malahide 23-7 Galwegians, Estuary Road

Malahide dented Galwegians hopes of survival as they recorded a big win at Estuary Road.

Three opening half penalties gave them a 9-0 cushion to build on for the second half as Wegians were unable to hit a score in the half. Dave O’Brien added a try after 57 minutes to see them lead 16-0.

Minutes later Wegians had a penalty try as Malahide had Dan Hayes sent to the bin, however John Shine crossed for their second try, a conversion into the stiff breeze extended the lead to 23-7. 

Rainey Old Boys 14-19 Greystones, Hatrick Park

Greystones kept up their 100% winning run in 2B after weathering a second half comeback in Magherafelt.

Rory McGinty crossed for an early try for the visitors but a converted try and three penalties saw Greystones move ahead 16-7 at the break. Rainey ht their second converted try of the game in the second half, but another penalty for the Wicklow men was enough to take the points.

Sligo 13-12 Wanderers, Hamilton Park (Strandhill)

Sligo moved up to sixth place after a narrow one point win over Wanderers who now drop to seventh.

The visitors started the brighter out West, two quick tires built a 12-0 lead before Finn Bamber made it 12-5 with their first try, on the stroke of halftime Bamber got in again after the ball was spun wide for the winger to grab their second, just twp between them at the break.

Just the one score in the second half as Euan Brown landed a penalty to put Sligo in the lead for the first time, both defences worked hard in that half as Sligo needed that performance.
