AIL Roundup: Division 2B Week 12

Greystones hold firm unbeaten at the summit, Dungannon climbed to third after ending a four game losing streak, while Enniscorthy picked up a huge win at home.

Dungannon 24-19 Belfast Harlequins, Stevenson Park

The boot of Ben McCaughey was a huge asset for Dungannon as the jumped up to third in 2B with a big win over their Ulster counterparts, the full-back notched four second half penalties on their way to a five point win.

Enniscorthy 19-5 Sligo, Alcast Park

The hosts struck first blood as Angelo Todisco crossed under the posts and Jack nailed the conversion for a 7-0 lead, Scorthy pushed on and were pressing well and Nick Doyle found himself getting over for their second try to give them a 12-0 lead as Sligo had no reply.

The visitors would get back into the game before the break, after a penalty was awarded off their scrum, Daire Byrne getting off the lineout to reduce the arrears to 12-5 at the interval. The second half was a tight contest but at the death Scorthy got the pivotal score to take victory as Nick Doyle got his second try as Ben Kidd landed the conversion.

Galway Corinthians 37-28 Malahide, Corinthian Park

The title chasers got off the perfect start with Michael O’Reilly getting the opening try, however the conversion just missed the mark, Malahide managed to come right back and notched a converted try to lead by two, before Finn McNulty crossed for the hosts second try and Logan Allen made no mistake the second time to put them 12-5 ahead. Both added penalties before the break as Corinthians had the 15-8 advantage.

The visitors landed two second half penalties to put them ahead by a point, but Matthew Devine powered over for the third try for the Galway side as they restored their lead to move ahead 20-14, Ray Dufficy added the bonus point a short while later as he crossed for another unconverted try.

Max Holmes added number five as the hosts were starting to make the result look beyond doubt, Malahide pulled one back but Harry Rodgers added a sixth just after to cancel out the effort, Allen’s conversion made it a 37-21 game, with a late try from the visitors giving them a losing bonus point.

Greystones 34-19 Galwegians, Dr Hickey Park

Stones utilised early pressure to get over for an early try to lead 5-0, they kept the engine ticking over as in the 11th minute Andrew Lunch powered over to make it a 10-0 lead after the kick again went wide. Just before the half hour mark Wegians came right back into the game, after kicking for the corner their lineout maul saw them power over for a try, the conversion was on the mark to make it 10-7.

The hosts did not look too phased by conceding the try, after 17 minutes they got under the posts to further extend their lead as the conversion moved them 17-7 ahead. In the 27th minutes the Wicklow side wrapped up the bonus point as they went over to make it a 24-7 lead. The Wicklow side looked to press clear and after the half hour mark they converted from a lineout maul to notch another try, 29-7.

Wegians added a try after the break to pull them within sight of their opponents, but after the hour mark Greystones notched another try to give them that healthy cushion, the visitors managed a late effort but in the end it just served as a consolation score.

Wanderers 20-10 Rainey Old Boys, Aviva Stadium Back Pitch

It took a while to see a score in the game but pressure from the hosts saw Rainey concede a penalty and the kick sailed over for a 3-0 lead. Jamie Murphy further extended the hosts lead as he went over for a unconverted try. Rainey managed to putt it back to 8-5, as they went over for their first try of the contest spotting as gap in the hosts defence.

Jamie Murphy added a second for the hosts before the break, a short while after they had another try on the board to move 20-5 clear of Rainey, however the Ulster side would cross for a second to give them a consolation score, as Wanderers held tough to prevent Rainey getting a losing bonus point.
