Ireland claim first win in 2022 Womens Six Nations

Ireland claimed their first win of the TikTok Women's Six Nations Championship, a 29-8 bonus point win over Italy at Musgrave Park this evening.

A big result for Ireland as they get their first points of the campaign, which sees them up to fourth in the table.

Two tries in the opening half gave them a 10-3 advantage, before they added three more in the second to seal the result, with Italy only getting a single try in the contest despite having kicked the opening score.

Italy were first on the board at Musgrave Park, Beatrice Rigoni landing a short-range penalty for an early 3-0 lead.

The Irish failed to reply immediately after going behind, they gained ground close to the Italian line but were guilty of turning over possession in the rucks.

Lucy Mulhall eventually found a gap to get in for Ireland's opening score, they were camped close to the line but could not ground with the Italy defence, the offload out wide saw Mulhall sprint toward the line to touch down, as they went ahead by two points after 21 minutes.

Ireland went over on the half hour mark, on the second bite of the cherry Amee-Leigh Murphy Crowe touched down to score, but the referee ruled out the try as she was held in the tackle, despite the TMO feeling a try was the decision.

Despite the disallowed score the hosts remained on top, putting pressure on the Azzurre defence and the pressure told as lock Giordana Duca was sent to the sin bin for cynical play.

Down a player Italy looked vulnerable especially in the ruck and maul, off a line out Ireland drove a maul forward with Neve Jones at the back, they inches closer and Jones touched down for a 10-3 lead after 36 minutes, Nicole Cronin missing the conversion, her second miss of the afternoon

Just four minutes after the restart Ireland continued their attacking exploits, Eve Higgins breaking clear to touch down for their third try, Cronin this time making no mistakes to kick the conversion for the 17-3 lead.

Italy remained on the back foot and after another Ireland attack, they were penalised with a penalty try at the 53rd minute mark, the bonus point try for Ireland as they looked a composed side all afternoon.

The game slowed down in tempo but both teams were still looking for a score, Ireland were dealt a blow in the 69th minute as Aoife Wafer who came on in the hour mark, making her debut was sent to the sin bin for an illegal tackle.

The Azzure made the advantage count after 73 minutes, hooker Melissa Bettoni getting over for the try, no stranger to scoring against the Irish, as they reduced the deficit to 24-8.

Just two minutes from time Ireland hit their fifth try of the afternoon, replacement prop Katie O’Dwyer getting in to score past the Italy challenge.
