Munster finish pool with bonus point win
Munster capped off their Pool B campaign with a bonus point 45-7 victory over London Wasps at Thomond Park.
Johann Van Graan’s side beat the Premiership outfit thanks to tries from Conor Murray, Jack O’Donoghue, Jeremy Loughman, Rory Scannell and a brace from Simon Zebo to maintain their 100% record in the Heineken Champions Cup.
Munster set the tone early on with some big carries from Jack O’Donoghue and Gavin Coombes in front of a loud Thomond Park crowd. It took less than ten minutes for the hosts to score their first try.
From what looked to be a knock on from Tadgh Beirne into the path of Conor Murray who touched down directly beneath the posts was later given as a try after the referee consulted with the TMO. On closer inspection, Dan Robson knocked the ball out of the hands of Beirne meaning that Murray’s try was given.
Just after the quarter of an hour mark, Ben Healy’s inch perfect chip over the Wasps defence went straight into the hands of Simon Zebo who scored Munster’s second try of the game, making him Munster’s all time European top try scorer.
London Wasps did get back into the game after phases and phases of possession. Scrum half Dan Robson picked the ball from the ruck and dived over the try line to add Wasps first points of the game.
Just as it looked like the visitors were growing back into the affair, Gavin Coombes picked the ball from the back of the scrum before bouncing through tackles into the Wasps five metre line. His back row partner Jack O’Donoghue picked up from the breakdown and powered over the line to give Munster a 21-7 advantage at the interval.
The hosts started the second period in the same fashion as they began the first. Diarmuid Barron ripped the ball from the back of the maul on Wasps five metre line before releasing Rory Scannell who looked to be diving over for Munster’s bonus point try. Scannell spilled the ball but it rolled backwards into the path of loosehead prop Jeremy Loughman who did secure the bonus point for Munster.
The second half did die down after this try with Munster’s defence soaking up anything that Wasps threw their way.
Just a minute before full time, it was a maul that caused Wasps trouble again. Munster chose to spread the ball wide this time with Mike Haley finding Simon Zebo in the corner to score his second try of the game.
With 80 minutes played, the game looked to be over but Munster opted to continue to play following a penalty awarded to them in their half. Jack Crowley kicked to touch and the resulting play ended up in Rory Scannell scoring a well deserved try to seal the win for Munster.
