PBC grab final spot at the death

Presentation Brothers College have rubber stamped their place, in the Pinergy Munster Schools Senior Cup Final, after a 21-19 win over their arch rivals Christian Brothers College in Musgrave Park this afternoon.

Another chapter filled with drama in a storied rivalry, CBC were on the back foot for the majority of the opening half, but emassed a 19-7 lead toward the end of the second half. It was Ben O’Connor who was the main man for PBC a late try and a difficult conversion seeing them home.

CBC looked rejuvenated in the second half and through Daire Burke, it looked like they had the final within reach before two late tries by PBC and the quality of his fly half counterpart O’Connor saw them win by two points.

Pres' had the better of the possession in the opening quarter of the tie, they worked hard to dominate the Christian’s half of the field, their forward line doing well to keep PBC scoreless.

Out of absolutely nothing Christian Brothers thought they had the opening try in the 24th minute, Daire Burke offloading to Billy O’Riordan who powered over, but the pass was deemed forward by the referee.

Presentation Brothers managed to get the try that had eluded them early in the half after 28 minutes, great hands by Rory O’Shaughnessy to power his way through before offloading to Fionn Rousel to cross, Ben O’Connor landed the conversion for a 7-0 lead.

Christian had been living of scraps for most of the half, their best effort being O’Riordans attempt, they ended the half with gusto having pulled the pressure on the presentation try line, in the end Jack Casey managed to cross for their try five minutes into injury time, Burke kicked the conversion to level it 7-7 at the interval.

Seven minutes into the restart Christians looked to have got their second try, Burke kicked a penalty which drifted wide, the bounce inside the try line favoured their attack to gather but the ball was knocked forward.

They continued to apply pressure and a beautiful cross field kick by Burke, was gathered perfectly in the air by O’Riordan for their second try of the afternoon, the missed conversion making it 12-7.

Christian Brothers College looked a completely different team in the second half, they started to apply the pressure as Presentation looked to be wilting, they intercepted a Pres attack and after running the phases Burke crossed for their third try of the afternoon, the fly half converting his own try to make it 19-7 after 56 minutes.

Despite being behind by twelve points, PBC kept applying the pressure they had on since the first whistle, and after 64 minutes Sean Condon gathered in the corner and crossed for their second try, to setup a climactic end to the fixture. O'Connor kicking an amazing effort from the sideline to put five between them, 19-14.

Pres gathered the restart well and after running the phases, the gained territory within metres of the CBC try line, the powered and shunted their way forward, before a piece of brilliance by O’Connor saw him sprint for the line to cross over, after the referee saw the grounding was there, the kicker stepped up to land another difficult kick from the sideline to give his schoolmates a chance at glory in the final, something they never got back in 2020.
