Gonzaga On The Radar After Opening Round Conquest

Gonzaga College have put the rest of the Quarter Finalists on notice after an emphatic 64-15 win over St Andrews in Clontarf this afternoon.

A hattrick by Hugo McLaughlin and seven successful conversions by Stephen McMahon proved pivotal to see Gonzaga make the next round of the Leinster Senior Schools Cup, ten tries in total from a dominant display they now meet St Marys in the last eight.

Gonzaga meant business from the off as Finn O'Neill finished from close range off their maul for a 5-0 lead with McMahon dissecting the posts to add the extras. Andrew's looked to reply with a penalty to put a score on the board but it drifted wide, they would find themselves having to defend just after and as we tricked into the 14th minute Paul Wilson the big number 8 added their score in the corner, McMahon moving them 14-0 clear.

The scores kept coming for Zaga, McLaughlin notched his first try after 17 minutes, he made some great movement to gather a pass from midfield before gliding over for their third try, McMahon looked composed from the tee, to make sure seven points were added for the third time of asking. After a strong lineout shy of the Andrew's line, Wilson powered over after their maul laid the foundations for him to gather possession and dot over, McMahon converted as they looked out of sight.

McLaughlin added their fifth try as the half was ticking to an conclusion, again the full-back gathered possession well from a blindside pass and crossed the whitewash for the fifth, McMahon made it a perfect contribution in the opening half off the tee with another successful kick, Andrew's would strike with the last act of the half as winger Jake Dolly crossed for a unconverted try to leave it 35-5 at the interval.

Zaga still had their heads up and the sixth try arrived a short while after the restart, another McLaughlin try but this one was scored by Luke McLaughlin as he powered over in the midfield with McMahon adding the bonus two points, Andrew's again despite the score line let them know they were still in the tie as they got their second unconverted try just after, Adam Tobin the number 8 powering over for the score.

Hugo McLaughlin would complete his hattrick after 46 minutes, another powerful scrum giving them the chance to run at Andrew's the full-back out wide to cross in the corner as McMahon kicked another beauty for a 49-10 lead.

Serious pressure from the Zaga attack brought about their next try, Andrew's looked to clear their lines but it was blocked down and following the block Mikey Wall touched down in the corner, the kick just missing the target in attempt of adding another two points, Aidan O'Flanagan was next to power as the Centre was well deserving of a score, the conversion again went wide.

Andrew's got their third and final score soon after to their credit they never gave up and kept up the fight until the end, Harry Machesney had a great Vinny Murphy Cup campaign and he got a try in the senior cup as he spotted a gap to exploit and get over, Richie Coman finished off a dominant display for Zaga with their tenth and final try of the contest in the final act of the half, the replacement getting over on the far side, again the conversion missed the mark
