Connacht hang on for big away win in URC

Connacht recorded their third win in the URC, as they came from behind to defeat the Ospreys at the Stadium.

The western outfit were left reeling early in the tie as they were left chasing the tie, they dug deep and worked hard to come from 12-0 down to seal the tie 22-19.

A big night for Darragh Murray as the Buccaneers club man made his first senior appearance for Connacht, while ex Leinster man Adam Byrne also became a debutant after moving West from the capital.

Ospreys started the better with a try inside two minutes, Jack Walsh worked his way behind the Connacht line, his pass to Luke Morgan was knocked backwards, Osprey’s remained in possession and slowly charged toward the line, with Huw Owen-Sutton touching down, Walsh making it 7-0 after adding the extras.

They remained on the front foot adding a second try seven minutes later, the Williams connection linking up in their attack, Reuben Morgan-Williams offloading wide for Keiran Williams to burst clear, Morgan-Williams continued his run to receive the pass back from the other Williams to cross uncontested, 12-0 after nine minutes as Connacht looked shell shocked early on.

Ethan Roots was sin-binned after 14 minutes for a dangerous tackle lifting Gavin Thornbury off the ground, but Connacht failed to make any use of the man advantage coming close to the line but unable to see their chances end with scores.

The visitors would eventually break their opponents defensive resolution after 33 minutes, Tiernan O’Halloran played a sublime pass to John Porch, but he was tackled well, they went again moving toward the right hand touchline, Jack Carty played a super pass wide for Alex Wootton to race clear and dive over, Carty had a difficult conversion from the sideline, but he made it look easy in the end, 12-7 after 34 minutes as Connacht were back in the tie.

Momentum was with the Connacht side and they ended the half with a flurry, crossing for their second try after 38 minutes, the centres in the build up with a great attacking move Thomas Farrell breaking clear, he passed to the onrushing David Hawkshaw who took a big hit short of the tie, Caolin Blade was clever to go himself from a short range and snuck under the defensive challenge to equalise. Carty landed the conversion for a 14-12 lead at half time.

Connacht were gifted a third try two minutes after the restart, Carty pinned them back with a grubber kick in behind, Ospreys took and won the lineout, however Morgan Morris spilled possession allowing Connacht to turnover close to the line, they were held up until John Porch received the ball and charged over for the third, Carty missing the conversion but a 19-12 lead gave them some breathing room.

Scores were hard to come by for both teams after Connacht got their third try, both emptied the bench to try and make a change to the tie, Carty opted for a drop goal as Connacht had an advantage in the 63rd minute, which gace Connacht a ten point winning margin.

Ospreys were held short of the line as Connacht touched down to try and clear the threat, the TMO awarded a scrum to Ospreys close to the line, they caused havoc for Connacht as Kieran Williams again turned provider as Sam Parry barged over to reignite the Welsh attack. Walsh reduced the arrears to three points 22-19 ahead of a nail biting final ten minutes.
