Roundup: AIL – Men’s Division 1B

Malone raced into an early lead in the All-Ireland League Division 1B, after their convincing win at home to Navan.

After a 19-month hiatus due to Covid-19, the competition returned with a solitary game on Friday night between Old Belvedere and Naas at Ollie Campbell Park.

The home side secured a 16-13 victory through Billy O’Hora’s try and three penalties and a conversion from Justin Leonard.

Naas replied with Donal Conroy’s touchdown and five points from the boot of Peter Osbourn but had to settle for a losing bonus point.

At Rifle Park, City of Armagh secured an away victory against Banbridge courtesy of Shea O’Brien’s brace and eight points from the boot of Kyle Faloon.

Adam Doherty was the lone points scorer for the hosts after his try, conversion and penalty but that wasn’t enough.

Highfield ignited their campaign with a winning start at home to St Mary’s College at Woodleigh Park.

Daragh Fitzgerald, James Taylor and Edward Earle scored converted tries, with Niall Hurley, Conor Corcoran and seven points from the boot of Conor Dean securing a losing bonus point.

Malone went top of the table after their 30-17 victory over Navan at Gibson Park, with David Cave, Claytan Milligan and Aaron Sexton crossing and 15 points from the boot of Rory Campbell.

The away side responded with touchdowns from Sean McEntagart and Evan Dixon, and seven points from Liam McLoughlin; but that wasn’t enough for Ray Moloney’s side.

In a thriller at Donnybrook, Old Wesley managed to sneak past nine-time All-Ireland champions Shannon 23-22.

Tries from Alastair Hoban, Jack Costigan and Eoin Deegan added to eight points from the boot of Josh Miller put the hosts in a commanding position.

But Shannon were just a point short through tries from Aran Hehir, Jamie McGarry, Ikem Ugwueru and seven points from John O’Sullivan, but had to settle for a losing bonus point on the opening weekend.
