Roundup: Lidl NFL Division 2 Round 2

Kildare recorded their 16th win in a row as they came away from Donegal with a four point win over Donegal. It was an impressive display from Diane O’Hora’s charges who are top of Division 2. Cavan and Westmeath both picked up their first wins with victories over Laois and Monaghan respectively.

Donegal 1-04 Kildare 1-08

Róisín Byrne scored 1-05 as Kildare secured their second win in Division 2 with a four point win away to Donegal. The result sees the Lilywhites top of their league.

Donegal were two points ahead after 14 minutes when Kate Dowd’s shot crept under the crossbar. Kildare responded well and the sides were level in the 27th minute. Donegal got a point just before the break to lead by one.

Two points put Kildare in front in the 43rd minute. Byrne then got her goal and Neasa Dooley followed up with a point to give Diane O’Hora’s side an excellent win.

Tyrone 1-07 Tipperary 0-09

Maria Canavan’s goal proved the difference as Tyrone recorded their second win in Division 2 with just one point to spare over Tipperary in Omagh.

Tyrone keeper Caitlin Donnelly was excellent in goals to help her side to this win. Tipp had opened up an early three point lead but Canavan’s goal saw the sides going in at half-time level – 1-03 to 0-06.

There was nothing between the sides in the second half and they were level with full-time approaching but Tyrone got a late point to give them a narrow win.

Cavan 0-09 Laois 0-06

Cavan picked up their first win of their league campaign with a hard fought win over Laois. It’s a second defeat for Laois and leaves them bottom of the table.

The Breffni County took the lead early on and they didn’t relinquish it. Laois had a goal chance saved by Cavan keeper Evelyn Baugh as they trailed by two at the break.

In the 35th minute Laois’ Katie Donoghue was sin binned. Laois did cut the gap to just one but Cavan replied with three points in a row. Laois were back to three points but couldn’t get a goal to give them a share of the spoils.

Monaghan 2-13 Westmeath 4-10

Karen Hegarty, Rachel Dillon, Fiona Coyle and Vicky Carr all found the back of the net to give Frank Browne’s side their first win in Division 2.

Sarah Tierney got Monaghan off to a great start with an early goal. Monaghan were ahead by four before Dillon got Westmeath’s first goal. Hegarty got their second goal in the 27th minute as Westmeath held a 1-04 to 2-05 lead at the break.

Westmeath opened up an eight point lead in the 34th minute when Coyle scored a goal. Carr got their fourth goal in the 47th minute and there was no way back for Monaghan. Eabha Sherry scored a consolation goal for Monaghan.
