Preview: Lidl NFL Division 2 Round 5

Big games in Division 2 this weekend. In Ballybofey, Donegal, who are currently in 3rd place, take on 2nd place Tyrone. Both sides will have their sights set on a place in the Division 2 Final so all points are crucial.

Down the other end of the table Westmeath welcome Tipperary to TEG Cusack Park. Both sides lost their previous games by just one point. The Lake County have just won one game and will want to pick up more points to avoid a relegation battle.

Monaghan v Cavan, Sun 3rd Mar, Cloghan, 1pm

It’s an Ulster derby and the meeting of two great rivals in Cloghan. Monaghan currently lie in 7th place in the table. They are just ahead of bottom side Laois in score difference.

Cavan are five points ahead of Monaghan. After a slow start they’ve picked up two wins. Last time out they had a good win against Westmeath. Rebecca McLoughlin’s goal proved to be the difference. Monaghan battled in their last game to draw with Donegal.

In their last two meetings in the league one point separated the two sides in the end. Cavan won last year while Monaghan won the previous encounter. Sunday’s game should be another tight battle.

Donegal v Tyrone, Sun 3rd Mar, Ballybofey, 2pm

Third place Donegal welcome second place Tyrone to Ballybofey on Sunday. With three games remaining both sides have their sights set on securing a place in the Division 2 Final.

Tyrone came from five points down to draw with Laois in their previous game. That ended their 100% start to the league. Donegal were held to a draw by Monaghan in their last game.

It’s an Ulster derby with a lot at stake and it has the makings of being an intriguing game.

Kildare v Laois, Sun 3rd Mar, Manguard Park, 2pm

It’s top versus bottom in Newbridge on Sunday. Kildare have been in superb form and have claimed four wins from four. Laois are bottom of the table, on score difference, having just registered one point.

Last time out Laois drew with Tyrone. They’ll be disappointed not to get the win, having been ahead by five points at one stage. Kildare had a narrow win over Tipperary. It was a real battle for the Lilywhites.

Laois will have taken heart from their performance against Tyrone and know they’ll have to put in an excellent performance if they are to stop Kildare. Kildare will be looking for their 19th win in a row.

Westmeath v Tipperary, Sun 3rd Mar, TEG Cusack Park, 2pm

Two teams who will be disappointed how their last games turned out. Both sides lost out by one point. Westmeath were beaten by Cavan while Tipperary lost out to leaders Kildare.

Westmeath have recorded just one win so far this season; that was against Monaghan. Tipperary have beaten Cavan and Laois.

These two sides met in the league last year with Tipperary securing a two point win. They’ll be hoping for the same result while Westmeath will want to pick up another three points; they are just two points off the bottom spot.
