Munster SFC: Tipp overcome slow Start to reach semi

Tipperary overcame an early four-point deficit to defeat Waterford 2-13 to 1-8 at Fraher Field this evening.

The hosts got off to a dream start scoring 1-1 without reply in the opening five minutes. Dermot Ryan pointed before Jason Curry slotted home a penalty after Colm O’Shaughnessy was brought down in the square.

Tipp slowly came into the game through the boot of Jack Kennedy and Conor Sweeney to draw level after 25 minutes.

Indeed it was Sweeney who got Tipperary’s first goal in the 27th minute through a penalty to go 1-5 to 1-2 ahead, gaining the lead for the first time.

From here the visitors took complete control of the remaining first period through two Mikey O’Shea points before Sean O’Connor got his second on the stroke of half-time to give Tipp a 1-8 to 1-2 lead at the break.

Waterford started the better in the second half getting the opening two points through Brian Lynch and Jason Curry.

Just as Waterford looked like gaining the ascendancy Tipp struck for their second goal through Stephen O’Brien. The Ballina man returning from a long absence running 30 yards plus before slotting the ball into the net to give the visitors a 2-9 to 1-5 lead after 47 minutes.

Waterford stayed in it through a pair of Jason Curry frees to stay within 6 points going into the final quarter.

Tipp pushed on however with Mikey O’Shea and Sweeney re-establishing an eight point lead at 2-13 to 1-8 on 66 minutes.

Liam McGrath was black carded late on for Tipp but the game was over as a contest at that stage as they eased out as eight point winners.

Manager David Power will be concerned with the amount of injuries picked up however as the face a race against time to recover for a semi-final against Limerick.
