Kerry Dismantle Tyrone To Reach Semi Final Berth

Goals from Diarmuid O’Connor and Sean O’Shea in a strong second half surge from Kerry, saw them overcome Tyrone by 12 points and book their spot in the All Ireland Semi Finals.

Both ended the game with 14 men, Paudie Clifford and Conor Meyler both carded in added time, but the game as a contest was over before added time even began.

An opening half that was tight, with Kerry ahead 0-9 to 0-6 at the break, Tyrone struggled in the second half, while Kerry were rattling scores aided by their goal scoring abilities, they put Tyrone to the sword to avenge their 2021 Semi Final loss.

The game started as a slow burner, until Paul Geaney brought it to life with a terrific point in the fifth minute to give Kerry the lead, Michael McKernan levelled matters minutes later as these two heavyweights settled into the tie.

Adrian Spillane restored the Kerry lead and with Niall Morgan missing a free, Sean O’Shea and David Clifford continued to chip away scores for a 0-4 to 0-1 lead. Darren McCurry made it a two point game with a free, before Tom O’Sullivan struck a sensational effort to end the quarter with aplomb.

Tyrone through the Cavan brothers came right back into the tie, Darragh with a point in the middle of Ruairi hitting two, levelled the tie with 21 minutes elapsed, Paudie Clifford helped swing the momentum back in Kerry’s favour, but McCurry was keeping Tyrone in the contest with his free taking.

Level for the third time Kerry finished the half the better, David Clifford with two points, Diarmuid O’Connor popping up with a score, Kerry with their direct running style, packed with pace was causing Tyrone issues, putting them ahead 0-9 to 0-6 at the break.

The Kingdom began where they left off as the second half was in its infancy, David Clifford tapping over a free in the opening minute, he had put the ball in the net after O’Shea was fouled, but no advantage brewing he had to settle for his point, the Fossa man was then fouled minutes later, this free was O’Shea’s to convert, Kerry leading 0-11 to 0-6 after three minutes of play, the desirable start.

Tyrone were having their weaknesses exploited by Kerry, the Kingdom's defence was not allowing an inch, Tyrone tried to pass across goal for Ruairi Canavan but Shane Ryan was out to field the danger, they turned defence to attack and scores from Spillane and O’Shea furthered their foothold on the tie.

Morgan produced a great save to deny Geaney a goal with 46 minutes played, that goal could have signalled Kerry’s passage to the semi finals, it would have been a ten point game, but from the resulting 45, O’Shea kicked his fourth point, a master craftsman at work leaving the score 0-14 to 0-6.

Fantastic football by Diarmuid O’Connor finished off a blistering Kerry attack to score the games opening goal after 53 minutes, the midfielder had space inside, took his time and dispatched low to the net.

Tyrone failed to register a score until the 53rd minute of the second half, testament to the Kerry backline not giving them a sniff, McCurry kicked his third point off a free and Tyrone would further that as Cathal McShane off the bench made it a nine point game.

Clifford and Donnelly exchanged points, before the Kerry captain turned provider with an audacious piece of skill, catching and immediately kicking a pass on the side-line for Tony Brosnan, setting up O’Shea for the second goal, O’Shea dismantling the Tyrone defence for the goal, the pass to create the move will be watched on repeat.

The Red Hands were still finding their scores as McShane, Darragh Canavan and Darren McCurry all registered points, but Diarmuid O’Connor who produced a MOTM display, kicked his second point to add to an earlier Stephen O’Brien point for a 2-17 to 0-12 lead, Morgan produced another fine save late on to ensure Tyrone did not concede a third.

Tensions reached boiling point between Paudie Clifford and Conor Meyler in added time as both were shown second yellow cards for another altercation, the two having a battle off the ball all contest, the side ending with 14 men each, as Kerry reached the semi finals.
