Roundup: Lidl NFL Division 2 Round 5

Kildare secured back to back promotions when they had a fine win over Laois in Manguard Park. It’s an amazing achievement for Diane O’Hora’s side with still two games remaining in Division 2.

Monaghan picked up their first win of the campaign with a four point win over their neighbours and great rivals Cavan.

Donegal 1-12 Tyrone 3-11

Tyrone gave their promotion hopes a big boost with a win over Donegal in Ballybofey. Tyrone are six points ahead of Donegal who are still in 3rd place with two games remaining.

Zoe Loughran scored Tyrone’s first goal to give them an early two point lead after eight minutes. The sides were level after 11 minutes when Niamh McLaughlin grabbed Donegal’s goal. A goal from Chloe McCafferty gave Tyrone a 2-09 to 1-09 lead at the interval.

Maria Canavan dispatched a penalty for Tyrone in the second half. That goal proved crucial and Donegal couldn’t find a way back.

Kildare 3-11 Laois 0-07

Kildare were promoted to Division 1 with their 19th win in succession following a comfortable win over Laois at Manguard Park.

It was the Lilywhites fifth win from five in the league. Aoife Rattigan scored their first goal in the opening half to leave them ahead by seven at the break – 1-06 to 0-02.

Róisín Byrne and Grace Clifford raised the green flag in the second half for Diane O’Hora’s side. Byrne ended the game with 1-05 to her name.

Monaghan 2-08 Cavan 2-04

Monaghan picked up their first win of the campaign with four points to spare over neighbours Cavan. 

A goal from Eabha Sherry gave Monaghan the perfect start with just one minute gone on the clock. Cavan cut the gap to one before Sherry found the back of the net for a second time in the 17th minute. Monaghan led at the break 2-05 to 0-03.

Cavan pulled a goal back to cut the gap to four points in the second half. They grabbed their second one with minutes remaining to leave three between the sides but Monaghan got a late point to seal a good win.

Westmeath 1-07 Tipperary 1-06

A goal from Sarah Dillon proved to be the difference as Westmeath picked up their second win of the campaign with a narrow win over Tipperary in Mullingar.

Dillon grabbed the goal with five minutes of the game remaining. Tipp made a great start to the game and were ahead by four points early on – Aishling Moloney scoring 1-01. The goal from the penalty spot. 

Westmeath kicked over three points to trail by two at the break 1-02 to 0-03. The sides were level in the second half before Dillon found the back of the net to edge Westmeath ahead by two points. Tipp got a late point as Westmeath held on.
