Connacht SFC: Goals key as Galway take the title
Galway finally got one over on Roscommon after coming out on top in the Connacht final in a bright and sunny Pearse Stadium.
The hosts netted two crucial first half goals from Shane Walsh and Patrick Kelly saw Galway lead at half time a lead they never relinquished.
Conor Daly and Diarmuid Murtagh both found the net in the closing stages for Roscommon which added hope to their cause, but it was too little too late.
It was a quick start to the match with both sides instantly finding their stripe matching score for score.
Roscommon were leading after 14 minutes but Galway found an extra gear scoring 1-3 to no reply.
Walsh netted the first goal of the game with his excellent individual effort putting daylight between the sides for the first time.
Conor Cox and Ultan Harney replied for the Rossies bringing it back to touching distance.
It looked like Galway would cause their own problems as Kieran Molloy saw a black card after 31 minutes.
Roscommon looked to seize this advantage and take the game to the Tribesmen.
Galway defended well and launched a counter attack after 33 minutes which saw Mountbellew man Patrick Kelly react first to an effort off the post and he finished superbly into the back of the net. Galway went in at the break leading 2-7 to 0-8.
The home side started the second half quickly outsourcing Roscommon 4 points to 2 in the opening ten minutes of the second half Damine Comer raising the white flag twice in succession as Galway pushed out their lead.
Conor Cox, Diarmuid Murtagh and Ultan Daly added some scores to Roscommons tally but they knew goals were needed.
Conor Daly finished off a fine Roscommon move palming the ball into the back of the net after 63 minutes.
Galway responded well Shane Walsh adding to his tally of 1-6 while Paul Conroy got on the scorecard with a brilliant long ranged effort.
Roscommon grabbed a second goal - this time Diarmuid Murtagh finding the back of the net after a long ball into the Galway box.
It was too little to late as the ref blew for full time straight after and Galway winning out in the end by three points.
