Roundup: Lidl NFL Division 2 Round 1

Kildare made a winning start to Division 2 with a four point win at home to Monaghan. A strong start laid the foundations for Tyrone’s win over Westmeath in Omagh.

Cavan 0-02 Tipperary 1-04

Tipperary got the better of Cavan in a low scoring game in Lacken. The sides were level at half-time scoring two points apiece.

Tipp kicked over two early points but Cavan replied and just before the break were on back on level terms.

The Breffni County failed to score in the second half. Emma Morrissey scored 1-01 early on in the second half for Tipp. Aishling Moloney was also on the mark for the Munster County.

Kildare 1-06 Monaghan 0-05

Kildare claimed an opening day win over Monaghan in tough playing conditions in Manguard Park. Roisin Byrne with an early goal for the Lilywhites.

Just two minutes had gone on the clock when Byrne found the back of the net. Monaghan replied with three points to draw level in the 13th minute. Kildare edged ahead and were two in front at the interval.

Byrne and Grace Clifford added on further points to open up a four point lead for Diane O’Hora’s side. A free from Leanne Maguire was Monaghan’s only score in the second half. 

Laois 0-03 Donegal 0-07

Having suffered relegation from Division 1 last year, Donegal made a winning start to Division 2 with a four point win away to Laois.

Donegal made a fine start to the game kicking over four early points inside the opening quarter. Laois failed to score in the first half as Donegal held a 0-04 to 0-00 lead at half-time.

Laois kicked over two points in the early stages of the second half but Donegal replied with points of their own to record a good win.

Tyrone 2-09 Westmeath 1-07

A strong start to this game helped Tyrone to a five point win over Westmeath in Omagh. The Ulster side had opened up a six point lead during the opening half.

Tyrone added a goal to their score but Westmeath fired over four points as they trailed by five at half-time – 1-06 to 0-04.

A goal from Maria Canavan in the second half gave the home side an eight point lead. Westmeath scored from a penalty late on but it mattered little.
