Review: Allianz NFL Div 2 Week 4

This weekend’s action saw the Dubs just about record their fourth win while Derry continued to look a dominant force. Louth and Cork recorded their second wins.

Dublin 0-16 Clare 1-12 @ Croke Park

Dublin scraped past Clare by the minimum at Croker on Saturday evening, after the Banner put in a serious performance for 60 minutes.

A Gavin Cooney goal in the first half saw Clare lead 1-8 to 0-8 at the interval and would hold a six point lead with just over ten minutes to go.

The Dubs, however, would storm back into the game and notch seven points in a row to comeback from their losing position. Points from Colm Basquel, Ciaran Kilkenny, Dean Rock, Con O’Callaghan levelled the game and a 75th minute Cormac Costello winner saw the Sky Blues to victory.

Meath 1-12 Louth 1-15 @ Páirc Tailteann

A Louth late late show saw the Wee County come from behind to stun the Royals at the weekend.

Mickey Harte’s charges gained a man advantage when Harry O’Higgins was sent off for a high challenge in the 24th minute and pressed their opponents to turn over kickouts and notch points.

The Royals netted a goal through Donal Keogan in the 47th minute and would score more to open up a five point lead as time was running out. Louth would not accept a third league defeat though and three consecutive points from Ciaran Downey and a late goal from Craig Lennon saw them past their Leinster rivals.

Kildare 0-7 Derry 2-15 @ Newbridge

The Oak Leafs continued to look the team best-suited to play top-flight football next year after they recorded a 14 point win over Kildare.

Derry led their hosts 1-8 to 0-3 at the break and a flurry of scoring early in the second half saw the side into a 16 point lead by the time Kildare scored their first point of the half through Paddy McDermott on 51 minutes.

The win sees Derry stay at the summit of the league as the Lilywhites look to be in more and more trouble.

Cork 6-18 Limerick 0-12 @ Páirc Uí Chaoimh

The Rebels stormed to a massive 24 point win over Limerick in a Munster Derby that was very much one-sided.

Cork led their opponents 4-9 to 0-6 at half time after a dominant display in the opening period.

The slaughter continued in the second half as Cork routed the Treaty County, with substitute Conor Corbett coming on to score 2-1. The Rebels had nine different scorers over the course of the tie while Limerick continued to look by far the worst team in Division Two.
